A HARVESTING RECORD. 204 Bags in One Day. [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 28 February 1906

A HARVESTING RECORD. 204 Bags in One Day. v At Gulnare (S.A.), Mr. P. H. Bennett, the Sunshine harvester expert, set him self the formidable task of reaping with one machine 200 bags between sunrise and sunset. This he successfully accom plished on Friday on the farm of Mr. D. F. Allen, adjoining the town. He had the assistance of two men and two teams of horses working three-hour shifts, and by sunset had tak'en off 204 bags. The crop was a ueauurui one 01 me iviaiauaii No. 3 variety, and averaged about 30 bushels, 29 acres having been reaped, cleaned, and (with the exception of 30 bags) all sewn. A young man named Thorgan, under ordinary conditions of working except as to hours and without - ? any preparation or expert assistance, succeeded in reaping 147 bags with a .1 Massey-Harris harvester. In this case, as in the other, two teams of four horses were used, and the crop was also a good one, going over 30 bushels.

CONTRIBUTED ARTICLES on Topical Subjects. APPRAISEMENT.—III [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 28 February 1906

CONTRIBUTED ARTICLES on Topical Subjects. APPRAISEMENT.— Ill (By L.C.) Again touching- this many-sided ques tion, we cannot give a better idea of the complications attached thereto than by quoting a few typical cases such as occur at almost every sitting of the Land Board in country districts. The first runs as follows : — A selec tor, whom we shall call A., made appli cation under the Act of 1899 for the re .appraisement of the capital value on his series of C P and C L lands. As a matter of course he intended also to ask for a reduction of rent on his C.L., but not hp.ing a professional land agent at his elbow he, like many others, had no idea t.iat he should have lodged a sepa rate application for same.. Well, in course of what was really a brief period of expedition — in our land administra tion — say a year or thereabouts, the matter came before the board, and the C.L. in particular being rough moun tainous country, a reduction of over 50 per cent, was made on the capital value...

RAILWAY EXTENSION AND CLOSER SETTLEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 28 February 1906

RAILWAY EXTENSION AND CLOSER SETTLEMENT. By A. K. Trethowan. Although without doubt the present Minister for Lands is earnest in his efforts to bring about closer settlement in this State and is presenting a bold policy of opening up all the available land for set tlement, still it is to the Works Depart ment that we must look for the settle ment of this great question. Whatever the Minister for Lands may do in throw inrr- r»r\»n nnnprnscarV rpsprvp.s and re suming estates, it is only by the exten sion of railways into the great wheat growing areas of the Central division that any degree of prosperous and _ per manent settlement can be obtained. Wheat, from the fact of its great bulk in comparison to its value, must be promptly and cheaply placed on the market, or the small margin of profit to the grower disappears ; and this can only be attained by. having railways within a reasonable distance. every opportunity of sneering at the rail way system of Victoria, but it is the rail way...

THE PAPER.—DR. DANYSZ. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 28 February 1906

THE PAPER.— DR. DANYSZ. . To the Editor. Sir,— I have received the first copy of 'The Farmer and Settler,' and am ex tremely pleased with it. I think it is the best got up and cheapest paper I have ever handled at the price. I feel sure it is the one thing that has been needed to keep the usefulness and worth of our Association in its proper place before the public, and prevent ' it, as of yore, from becoming almost forgotten for the greater part of the year, between tne annual uun ferences. There are thousands of people enjoying benefits that have been brought about often by the long and patient ef forts of the Farmers' and Settlers' Asso ciation, who are so accustomed to hear other parties claim all credit for every beneficial reform that even those favour ably disposed towards the Association would, if put to the. test, be at a loss to point out one alteration or regulation in the laws affecting them that had actually been brought about by- its efforts. : This state of things sho...

WALGETT. [Newspaper Article] — The Farmer and Settler — 28 February 1906

WALCETT. (From Our Correspondent.) At the Police Court, J. T. O'Brien, of Tollwood, proceeded against Edward Price for neglecting to give the required notice of his intention to muster sheep. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined £2 and costs amounting to £1 4s. 6d. The weather during the past fortnight has been most oppressive, with every in dication of rain. Several thunderstorms have passed over, but only a few points nave been recorded locally, aitnougn 1 hear that in parts of the district very serviceable showers have fallen. A good fall is badly needed, and as I write the prospects are good. The continued dry weather is causing the destruction of thousands of rabbits. In parts of the district the nimble rodent has become so weak from starvation that he can easily be caught on foot. Secretary Fulton, of Underbank, writes : —'I hope the paper may prove a great success. With so many branches, a little news from each, as well as the expressed views from members over such a large...
