MOTOR NOTES PALMER CORD [Newspaper Article] — Punch — 15 January 1914

By ' Magneto Sparka." . Oh ! that poor horse I Don't I see the poor beast getting it aii day long on the stiff hill in front of my house. Great heavy lorries loaded with coal, drays, furniture vans, carts of all descrip tions, with one or two horses pulling in the shafts for dear life, whilst the "poor, sweated" driver sits on top or the load and roars and curses and lashes out with the whip to his heart's content. It's the horse that jibs that 1" admire most. But how I pity him for his little jib, when the brute with, the whip gets to work. Picture a four-wheeled carrier's van vvit.h one wretched-looking horse in the yhaits • and about six or eight people seated in the van. No one attempts 'o get out and lighten the burden. The hill is one of the steepest in the citj,. and the horse is forced up every inch until the strain grows too much and he stops—stops only for a minute or two, perhaps, to get his second wind and make another move. But the fool at the other end of the reins obj...

ANSWERS TO MINING CORRESPONDENTS [Newspaper Article] — Punch — 15 January 1914

ANSWERS TO MINING CORRESPONDENTS "M.Tt.K."—We think It would he rather takintr a risk to buy into Central Red, White and Blue, even with prices at the present low rnte. It is pretty dear now that shareholders will have to he prepared for some disappointments in tho deeper crround. The work undertaken at 800ft. aj.d SSOft. has failed to show anything like a payable reef at that depth, and it seems certain that, ihe best of the stone has been beaten out between 314ft. and 400ft. We do not sav that a blank has been'drawn in the deeper workings ; hut it is a fact that the results to date havo h»en negative; iind distinctly disappointing. "IT F." (Caulfield).—T. Mining. ARARAT— [Newspaper Article] — Punch — 15 January 1914

IWnina. By "L s. d." ARARAT— .When' Melbourne brokers came back to work, one of the first gold mining stocks to which they turned their attention was New Langi Logan. It was noticeable that higher prices were commanded than before the holidays. Bid ding started at about the same figure, but it was not long before values had been pushed ahead. Some reports have been received from the manager, and the main thing these seem to indicate is that the developments in the No. 39 bore prove the lead to be almost 1000ft. wide. This bore was put down about 50ft. or 60ft. beyond the No. 38 bore. It has bottomed at 5Sfi., and has shown several colours of gold. Work will be continued here, and it. is expected that, within the next week or two something definite should be known as to the value of the wash at this point. ballarat— Although most of the Ballarat companies have just resumed work after effecting holiday re pairs, it is possible to give some details of the work in hand at some of the mi...

THE LADIES LETTER HOLMBY HOUSE[?] TOORAK. [Newspaper Article] — Punch — 15 January 1914

HOLMBY HOUSE " TflORAK. Dear Peg,— It Talking about the exhibition of antique fur niture to be held at Government; House, a well-known lady at a luncheon party recently related an experience she had abroad. On the advice of relations, who had just done the trip, she and her husband did a motor tour through France. On one occasion they stopped at a farmhouse of exquisite cleaulirie:-;s to ask the way. An old Frenchwoman, with the face of a guileless child and the manners of an aristo crat, begged them to come in and iry her coffee, which they did. In the living room of the house they saw one of the loveliest bits of old furniture possible—a quaint writing bureau, wonderfully carved. They both wanted it bad ly. After a few tears and much volubility from the old lady, who said it had Leen in her family since time was, she- agreed to let them send for it—at a price consisting of three figures! The travellers were delighted with their "an tique." It was "such a iind, too." In Mel bourne ...
