Sydney is pretty well up to date for hotels and cafe's, although of the latter there are few. But on strolling through the Strand we find oneof very large dimen sions kept by host Grannes, who is a very enterprising individual, and who has made such convenience for the comfort of his customers that success is assured to him. The lavatories both for ladies and gentlemen are ali that can be desired ; in fact the whole arrangements for the comfort of customers are so complete that it is worth while paying a visit to this cafe to have a cool meal. We can vouch for the delicacy of the viands. Pianos properly Tuned and Repaired AT SEASONABLE RATES.

{#rownb tfyt DJorfb* ? ^ THE LORD MAYOR IN BELGIUM. The Lord Mayor left London last month with the object 'of paying an official visit to Brussels and its International Exhibition. In this connection it may be mentioned that the late Sir Beniamin Phillips, during ?his Mayoralty, also visited Brussels in his official capacity, The Lord Mayor was accompanied, in addition to the Sheriffs and several Aldermen, by the Lady Mayoress, Miss Faudel-Phillips, Miss Stella Faudel-Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Henriques, Mr. B. S, Faudel-Phillips, and Mr. Lionel H. Faudel Phillips. On landing at Ostend from the Princess Clementine (by which the Chief Rabbi also crossed), the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were welcomed by M. THE JEWISH QUESTION IN THE TRANSVAAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

THE JEWISH QUESTION IN THE TRANSVAAL. We note with much pleasure that strenuous efforts are being made in the Transvaal to remove the dis abilities under which our coreligionists there are at present labouring. The *' Johannesburg Standard and Digged News ' to hand by this mail brings us some welcome intelligence, that an influentially-signed petition is about to L.e presented to the Volksraad, pointing out that members of the Jewish community by the old Constitution (Grondwet) are debarred from entering Parliament (the First Volksraad), that they are disqualified from filling any post under Govern ment to which a salary is attached, that their schools receive no subsidy from the State and that the revision of the Grondwet being now under the consideration of the Raad, the moment is opportune for placing the Jewish population upon the same footing as the members of the State religion. Mr. Sam Marks (of the well known house of Lewis & Marks, of Finch Lane and Pretoria), Mr. S...

ROSH HASHONA. AT DAVIESVILLE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

ROSH HASHONA AT DAVIESVILLE; BY A COREESPONDE NT One of the things which tend to keep alive the spirit of Judaism is the social and hospit able feeling displayed by one co-religionist to another in the country districts of New South Wales. It is impossible for a large number of Jews living in the country to leave their busi ness to attend the Services in the Svnao-oe-ues in Sydney. As one of those who is in such a. position, I was very pleased to be favoured to spend the New Year in company with other co-religionists at the residence of Mr. H. Levy of Daviesville, near Wellington. A very plea sant time was spent at their home which was intensified by the heartiness of the welconi - and the hospitality extended to all by Mrs. Levy and family. Mr. Levy conducted the servic ??$ in an extremely creditable manner, in fact tbo ceremonies were performed as well as any I. have witnessed in Sydney. Services will also be held at Mr. Levy's residence on Yom Kippur.. Priddy's, the well known ha...

THE VICTORIAN AGE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

THE VICTORIAN AGE. Contributed. The Victorian Age has been pre-eminent in every branch of knowledge. There has been a mighty onward flood of new thought, widening and deepening ' with the progress of the suns,' and sweeping away before it many of the credited myths of bygone times— the effete theories of earlier ages. In this triumphal march of learning, dogmatic theology has not soocl still. The impregnable rock of Holy Scripture has been exposed to the search light of new criticism, which, calling to its aid all the appliances that modern research can give it, has shown beyond dispute and above oriticsm that from ' in the beginning ' to ' in the sight of all Israel ' was not written by one man, and that the authors of the Five Books owed their inspiration to sources unsuspected, or at any rate unacknowledged by our ancestors. Exactly twenty-five years have passed since George Smith deciphered the Assyrian tablets in the British Museum, and read the history of the Creation, and mor...

' Our Father and Kingf ! 0 write us in the book of of pardon and forgiveness. ' The debts that we owe to the Lord are for ?damages to His creation by wilful and repeated violations of His divine order, by which we have wiped out His likeness and image in our selves, and have become spiritually deformed and monstrous beings ; wherefore we must be borne again to regain the angelic form, . and || inherit the kingdom of God. If we were born |i in the order in which man was created, we j§ would not be in any evil, nor. indeed, would we 1 know what it is ; for he who has not been, and 1 thence is not in evil, cannot cognize its exist I ence, nor know its disastrous effects. Indeed, I if any evil was pointed out to him he would not 1 believe it possible Such was the infantile 1 innocence of Adam and Eve, and their naked I ness, of which they were not ashamed, por I trayed it. THINGS WELL SAID. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

THINGS WELL SAID To err is human, to forgive divine.— Pojje. Grit is the grain of character. It may be describedas heroism materialized— spirit and will thrust into the heart, brain gand ibackbone, so as to form part of the physical substance of man. — E. P. Wiwpple. Be honest with yourself, whatever the temptation ? say nothing to others that you do not think, and play no tricks with your own mind. Of all the evil spirits abroad at this hour in the world, insincerity is the most danger ous. — tlames Anthony Fronde. We often wrong ourselves, but we soon forgive our selves these wrongs, and they do not lessen our love to ourselves; and in like manner we should forgive and love our neighbours. — Wilberforoe, A more glorious victory cannot be gained over another man than this, — that when the injury began on his part the. kindness should begin on ours. — Tillotson. If thou wouldst find much favour and peace with God and man, be very low in thine own eyes ; forgive thyself little and ot...

- That there are still workers J eft who will sacri fice much for the sake of Judaism, is daily being demonstrated. A glance at the over crowded state of the Great Synagogue during , the New Year points a powerful moral. The instinct and faculty of Judaism is as bright to day as ever it was. But it is compulsorily measured against a too even guage of hard and fast lines, and too great a consideration of what other people do. Judaism should not want examples or pattern in any other community — 1 it is the tree of which the whole system of morality as preached and practised by others is merely an off-shoot or branch. Let us rally ? round our ministers and they will in turn reciprocate that good feeling that proved- the cement of Judaism— that made the attendances at the Synagogue 'a pattern for any part of the world,' — that enabled one Jew to know another, and be happy to assist and extend his welfare and commercial prospects— that made the vexed question of the introduction of prose...
