NIVE RIVER. [FORM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 26 June 1875

NTVE RIVER. [fbom our own correspondent. Since my last we have had. very miserable weather —nothing but a drizzling rain ; and even now, while' I am writing this, it is the same. The roads are impassible, a continued quagmire making it next to an impossibility for anything to travel on them. People that have been, rash enough to make the at- ' tempt hare lost some valuable cattle by having to leave them to die in bogs, not being able to render ny assistance to the animals so as to extricate them- To make things worse, there is a very great j scarcity of ratioas in the district, both in town and ' on stations. It is nothing but borrowing rations, ' and should a load happen to arrive at any place, it 1 can be disposed of in less than half-an-hour. ■ I have been informed, by very good authority, that there is to be a police barracks erected at the Burenda township, which in itself will be a want well supplied ; but I certainly think that the popu- , lation of the distri&ls quit...

DALBY. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 26 June 1875

DALBY. [f&om our own correspondent. ] ,1 am glad to say that .Madame Anna Bishop, whose second and last concert came off on Wed nesday,. hada much better house than on the. fanner evening. It was a piiy she came up dur ing the race week, when there were so many , counter attractions, as, with lier very excellent troupe, she might have secured full houses at any other time. The circus has cleared out to " fresh fields and pastures gay," after a success ful run of three.nights. The only attraction left is; the .Waxworks, which has been very fairly patronised for over a week, and seems loth to qint. And the xace week over, we now revert to. our own "old quiet ways'again as it recedes into-the shadowy past; * : At thes Bolices Court, on Saturday, Morgan Cdvann%h,*liorse^faler,. was brought up by the police charged witii assaulting Robert Walters, whereby he did ■ him grievous bodily harm. It appears that 'they were both present at the settling-up of the races,- which took place ...

SURAT. [fbom oub. own correspondent."] The horses intended to compete for our annual meeting, to .take place on the 29 th instant, are all here and eager for the fray ; the three top weights seem to be most fancied. Plover, the dark horse, is well in if there is any go in him, but his con dition is not yet up to the work. The favourite for the double event of Maiden Plate and Flying Handicap is Mr, All Chee's Gipsy, by Pigtail, out of Small Feet.. She won the Maidea Plate at the last Christmas races, and will be piloted by the I think, be good fields for the races. All the stables are filling, and two or three horses are coming from Condamine. Lumpy, a oolt. who ran and won at; your races, had his eye knocked out with a stick by the yahoo who had him in charge coming down from Roma. The hon. members for the Maranoa, Balonne, and Warrego will, I hope, take counsel together and get the road made passable through what-is known as the lane, extending fifteen miles this side from Dalby. ...

PARLIAMENT. (From the Courier.) TUESDAY, JUNE 22. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 3 July 1875

{From ike Courier.) Tuesday, J*nra:22. Mr. P. Bell, member for Dalby, made his appearance for the first time in Hie House . session, shortly. after the commencement of the (sitting. The honorable gentleman took his seat on the front Opposition benches. On the House being moved into - Committee of- Supply, Mr. Ivory considered that these were some matters which required attention before Supply was granted. There was the whole question of the Crown lands.' What was going to be done f Beyond some resumptions having been made, there was nothing being done. He could get no returns. He had tried , to get information of what was going on; one return had been made—others had been shelved. He could not go into Supply, if enquixy was burked. Mr. De Satge thought there ought to be replies to reasonable demands, though it was a mercy that there was ho comprehensive land legislation from such a Ministry as the present. He was much relieved that there was nothing of the kind. Mr. Morehead was more...

GOOD TEMPLARISM. To the Editor of the Western Star. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 3 July 1875

GOOD TEMPLARISM. To the Editor of the Western Star. J Ste,—I find that this subject is now exciting much interest in this town. As is natural "with every question affecting the public ■welfare, there are varieties of opinions on this one also. Some of these, I may say, are ridiculous inthe extreme ; still they are asserted with the -consciousness of belief. It Trill be seen by my signature that I am one who . has given his word to be devoted-to the cause for life; and I tope, by your per mission, that others' may be, persuaded to adopt the same wise plan. In perusing a small pam phlet on the above subject, I -was much struck by the clear and concise explanation of the prin ciples on which Good Templarism maintains its powerful and beneficial sway—I allude to the vow taken by the Good Templar. It cannot be denied by anyone reading the following remarks that they contain truthful sentiments which apply to all and everyone who have their own well-being and that of their fellow creature...
