The Bega Gazette "Quod Petis Hic Est." SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1865. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 28 October 1865

"Quod Pctis Hie Est." SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28. 18G5. In prospecting the Brogo River the public must not be too sanguine of success, they should bear in mind that failure is possible, and over sanguine minds sink under dis appointments; tis' this we wish to guard against. There are strong and reasonable grounds to suppose that gold is deposited there in paying quantities, and the only way to solve the question is by prospecting. If such should prove correct, the benefit to this district would be incalculable. A local market would spring up for the fanners— employment for the carrier—increased de mand for beef for graziers —an increase of ready money customers for storekeepers— an opening for tradesmen—land would in crease in value, and the influx of population would add new life and vigour to the energies of the people. Considering the many great advantages attendant on suc cess, surely it is worth while trying for, even at the risk of failure, especially as it does not entail any great...

Impounding.—War has not only been declared, but open hostilities have commenced; it would Lave Icon more honorable if—previons to going tojutremities—the '.defences hod been repaired and secure, iSlEs to put tbein on a proper war footing. We allude to the late impound ing raid of Mr. James Hatminp, off dentin's Flat, Arc. and although notices were published of the intended impound ing, yet, if the fences arc down, and the gates off their liingei, how are the people to keep their cattle from tres passing,—at present it looks very like a trap. However, we must say every man has aright to protect his own, and as grass is aa object at present, we cannot wonder at - people using extreme measures to save it for their own but we should be very careful not to wantonly injuro oar neighbors, all we require.is our rights. Last week a mob of cattle were impounded off the above lands, and drove to Panbula Found, a distance of 26 miles. This proceeding may be lawful but it is unjust in the extrem...

Correspondence. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE BEGA GAZETTE.) [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 4 November 1865

(To the Editor or the Bega Gazette.) StR,—My attention was called to a most despicable letter which appeared in your last issue, signed "Old Resident," in which the writer, instead of answering "Occasional Visitor's" letter relative to Merimbula, has gone out of his way, as he might think to injure me, (he is evidently mistaken in his man) although I afti informed that every word contained in " Occasional Visitor's" letter can be sworn to as truth. As all monoply's must fail, I can easily understand the pangs of conscience of "Old Resident" in having ihe pilfering monoply of Merimbula broken up after being carried on so long, thanks to the Beya Gazette, and the efficiency of the police; there ap. pears to be a ehange gradually taking place for the better. But why on earth should "Old Resident" let his low mind fill itself with venom towards me ; he says he has stuck "Accommodation House right in my nose;" he must mean that he and bis friends have thereby stopped the bread from, comi...
