ACROSS THE 8EA& Croam of the Cables. LONDON, Wednesday. Great Britain has joined other | nations in protesting against the imposition in the new Amencvi Tariff Bill of deferential duties in favor of goods' carried in American vessels. An attempt to Assassinate the Grand Duke. Frederick of Baden, was made yesterday by an un known man at Mannheim, a city in the Grand Duchy. The would be assassin attempted to stab the Grand Duke, who was for tunately not tbu'ehed by the weapon. The discover}' has been made of a conspiracy directed against the life of King Alfonso of Spain, who recently experienced4 a nar row cscape from assassination in Madrid. Several anarcjiists have been arrested in Montpell icr in connection- with a plot to kill King "Alfonso during his com ing visit to France. CLYDESDALE AND SHIRE, HORSES. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Echo — 9 May 1913

CLYDESDALE 'AND shire. HORSES. There is> much difference of opinion with regard to Clydes dale and Shire draught horses, and in mariy cases-it'is merely a matter of taste, without con sidering tiie essential points. The Clydesdale is the 'more ac tive horse, but there .is a teriden-^ cy to becoming too small unless great care in mating is followed.. As the object in breeding is to keep up the weight of the draught horse, the Shire, of -a good'sort is likely to bring about this desirable end. Mr. H. W. Potts, principal of the Hawkes bury College, gives the following' description of the two breeds . i. The Clydesdave as a breed is inferior" in weight, and power, and less massively built; also -is less in weieht. 2. The Clydesdale is more active ; he is a quick niovcr. • 3. The Clydesdale has a long, striding walking action. • 4. The Clydesdale possesses a sloping or oblique shoulder, neck, long stride ; less concuss ion, on its legs, with-freedom of . action.. . . . • 5. The ^'Clyd...

CULTIVATION OF MAIZE. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Echo — 9 May 1913

CULTIVATION OF MAIZE. . • ! The maize crop makes heavy demands upon the soil' fertility and causes exhaustion'more rap idly than any other of the crops commonly grown in this State. ' Straw crops, such as wheat or oats, do not rapidly ■. .less'iii the j fertility, while other crops, not ably legumes, improve the soil. If a crop be sown immediately j after maize, even on normally rich" land, it will be noticed th • t whi'st growing,, it lacks the rich | green color of a healthy, well nourished crop. The capacity of ' the soil, to meet the dsmands of such a gross feeder_'is directly mani fested in the appearance of the plants. Rich, deep, alluvial soils favor' rapid development of the stem and foliage,, which. are forced to "an enormous .size, while on poor, shallow land the stalks are, short, and the leaves small and thin. It is an adapt able plant, however., responding with bountiful yields under fav orable circumstances, but yet giving a generous, return even when grown unde- harsh...

NUMURKAH. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Echo — 9 May 1913

NUMURKAH. The annual meeting of St. George's Church of England was held in the church on Wednes day, the 30th April. There was a fair attendance. The rector, on behalf of the congregation, welcomed several new comers to the parish. Probably as a result of being driven from their hiding places by the recent rains, snakes have been fairly plentiful during the last few days. On Sunday three lads killed a large one on the   Wunghnu road, and the same day Mr. S. Callander despatched a smaller one on the Katunga highway. The two reptiles were in a lively mood, and gave their executioners some trouble.   The chairman (Mr. C. An drews), at meeting of the Li censes Reduction Board, announ   ced on Monday that the licens ing inspector, Inspector Corkill, had submitted the following list of hotels to be dealt with at sitt ings to be held at the court house, Numurkah commencing   on Friday, June 13 Picola Hotel, Picola, and Victoria Ho tel, Nu...
