Horrors of War. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 30 December 1904

Horrors of War. In a letter received from China, Mr. Fred C. Newell (son sf Mr. ? 'You can.' nava Mr. Newell, ' have no idea of the horror of this war. I watched 7000 Russians: brought here, hundreds of them dying along the road, and what is to . feed the remainder I cannot conceive. The out lying districts aro perfectly bare, having: been raided already, and tliero is nothing to be hud but a little toa and coarse dry bread. For some days I hud nothing but boiled millet. It will cost me £5 to send' i this letter down to the port by a Chinese i runner, and it is more thun likely ymi will never get it. Not a word of English do I hear. 1 have picked up some Rus sian aud German, Chinese I know a little of, and with the French that was knocked into mo at school I got along...

Fodder Tree. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 30 December 1904

Fodder Tree. j 'The analysis of the Napunyah tree made by. Mr. Guthrie, chemist' for the Department of Agriculture, and of which a copy appeared in our last issue, brings to notice one of the finest edibles for slock feeding in times of drought. To Mr. William M. Chris tian, of Messrs. Christian Brothers, of Briiulinggabba nnd Maranoa stations, Bourke district, is due (lie credit, of this highly important discovery, as the supply of Napunyah is appreciably extensive in thu districts to which it is indigenous. When Mr. Christian first, decided to test the value of this fodder tree, about 12 mouths ago, he was subjected to a measure of ridicule from sceptics who then regarded Napunyah as being valueless as a food for sheep. When experiments were made it was found that tbi.i fodder not only sustained the sheep which were fed on it, but its great nutritive value served to actually im prove the condition of the stock, and ewes with lambs at foot were able to worthily fullil their materna...

Centralisation. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 30 December 1904

Centralisation. One of the arguments Mr. Carrulh ers brought up against the 900 square miles proposals (which also includes a demand for a seapori) shows I hat lie, like a- great many other politicians, thinks that Sydney is New South ?\Vul..« '.Hi nltWio . . V:..J to the idea; of Twofold Bay being made a Federal- Port because all the Cus itoins revenue -would- be lost to New rSouth Wales' oii goods landed there, and that all the exports and. imports not only of' the Fuleral Territory but Southern Riveriiia would go tlirough Twolold Bay. Surely it. would be simple enough to make an '.equitable adjustment/ so far as the Customs irevenuo would be 'concerned-, aud as for the rest, what the Southern por tion of New South Wales wants is a convenient seaport./ Its expense may not justify its construction yet, but the principle stands for the future. Centralisation in Sydney has been one of the greatest mistakes of the past, and tho sooner the A-ested interests whiclr promote it are broken...

Smiler Hales. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 30 December 1904

Smiler Hales.     Mr. A. G. HALES, the well-known war-correspondent (who served his early newspaper apprenticeship in Australia) recently lectured at Johan- nesburg on the Russo-Japanese war.   His audience included Lord Milner and   Lord Roberts. After a reference to the troubles which had been experi- enced by war correspondents, the lecturer went on to point out that the Japs had discarded the religion of their forefathers and now embraced the re- ligion of the rifle, their old and beauti- ful temples being deserted. They could, he said, put 750,000 troops on the field, the infantry and artillery sections of which were second to none, but the cavalry were of no earthly   use. One great feature of the Japan- ese soldier was his sobriety. He was never seen under the influence of liquor iu uniform, whilst to ask a Japanese officer in uniform to have a drink was regnrded as a insult. The Russians were quite the reverse,...
