The Ring In The Spring During spring semester Penn. State-Behrend is proud to present, as part of the Mary Behrend Cultural Series, the highly acclaimed Bayreuth Centennial production of Richard Wagner's immortal The Ring of the Nibelung. This version of The Ring was staged by French director Patrice Chereau, conducted by Pierre Boulez, and produced under the supervision of Wolfgang Wagner at the celebrated Bayreuth Festival in Germany. At first considered controversial, this production is now viewed as a landmark among Wagner productions. The operas will be shown on a large screen with suitable amplification of the sound track, using the same tapes which formed the basis of the PBS series of several years ago called "Wagner's Ring." To introduce Ring, Professor Emeritus Benjamin Lane will return to campus for an introductory lecture on Wagner and his music, with support at the piano by music instructor David Stuntz. The lecture and the subsequent performances will all begin a...

The Ring Of The Nibelung Wagner's Ring is comprised of four operas ¦which tell the story of a magic ring stolen from the Rhine maidens by Alberich, the dwarf, and then taken from him by Wotan, king of the gods, and Loge, god of fire. With the theft of the ring, Wotan places the gods under a curse from which they will be released only by the death of the young Siegfried, the lover of the Valkyrie Brunnhilde, Wotan's favorite daughter. With a long and complicated story reminiscent in many ways of J.R.R. Tolkien's popular The Lord of the Rings, The Ring of the Nibelung is one of the crowning musical achievements ef all time.

Sometimes joining the crowd is not the "in thing" norms accepted by the peer group. Peer groups prevail quite frequentlly in the college atmosphere because we are more closely associated with our peers. I don't want to appear as if I am totally against peer groups in college, because for the most part they help integrate us into college life. Other times peer groups can be harmful because they tend to lead people astray. All of us at one time or another have felt the desire to be accepted. We all want to be a part of the crowd. This in and of itself is not a bad thing. When we know we are part of a crowd our self-worth is raised and we feel good about ourselves. However, when we lose our identity as an individual then the group we've identified with becomes our liability. Friends are fine, but there are times when they may, whether on purpose or unintentionally place undue peer pressure on . their peers. Recognizing peer pressure can be easy, resisting it for some individu...

Screen talk by T. McGee Collegian Contributing Writer As the unquestioned champion of the cinematic box-office, Steven Spielberg has thrilled thousands with his fun adventure filled extravaganzas. In the past decade Speilberg has been responsible for the most popular and profitable films in movie history, beginning with 1975's Jaws. You know the list from there, Close Encounters, Raiders, E.T., etc. Though he began as a director, recently Speilberg has shifted to the role of producer, choosing to direct only occasionally, which is not to say that any Spielberg production is without his indelible stamp. It almost appears that he has directed these films anyway. This summer, two Speilberg productions have made their way into local theaters and I must say, each film made a completely different impression on me. First, the good news. Back To The Future, directed by Robert Zemeckis, is the fast paced story of Marty McFly, a high school student who takes the ride of his life when ...
