FACTS AND FANCIES, KfpTil and ISeaaity.— I'oels and songsters have written and sang fo much in praise ol night, that Mr. \ellowyln-h almost shrinks from attempting to rer conl his views and opinions on this sable t-ubject. But ho loves the calm hours of evening, and almost adores the eloquent silence of night, when the ceiulean vault is hung with its rich drapery of clouds, and heaven seem- illuminated by ten thousand I'jicut'hles? lights. Amid such scenes Charles love; lo muse. He then dreams of the past — arc'. ;i past he has, full of rich memoties of i,ivo and happiness, that almost makes the man forget his manhood. AGRICULTURAL A Good German NtmoN about Fruit Tree's.—Ihe present great deatth of fruit suggests to us a few remarks concerning a good.custom, whoseHraces are still found, all through Eastern and-Middle Pennsylvania. The early 'settlers- of Lancaster, York, and-other adjoining counties were Gcrmansj.and in-their emigration,' to *-.this country brought with' them the good custom of planting fruit trees/ ; Eyery farmer-was (careful to set out apple, cherry, and "pear trees,-,and quite commonly too a grape .vine. During a visit to those first settlements latelj'-we made special.note of -the unifc-TiM-* ity-'of this custom. Every farm-house has its garden, attached to the house,' and oil, the corners of this garden you.tnay .confix' dently look for one or nrore pear trees, and almost to a certainty a quince tree- Not unfrcqaently there is a front yard, and if so-there is sure to-be a pear tree in it. The spring house or fEo' pump had its grape vine- .-By-simpjy following ojit the n...

Bees and Honey in 1.858;—The present season is a bad one for- bees. Honey is scarce in consequence of the wet and cold weather that prevailed during the -period of the blooming of the honey bearing flowers. With the exception of a few days during tho flowering of the white clover, scarcely enough honey was gathered to supply tho every day wants of ihe- bees.— New swarms have done poorly of late.— The same may be said of swarms divided—(artificial swarming,)—at the end offJuly. The Basswood or Lime that usually, supplies the bees with a large amount of honey in sections whore this tree grows, has noi bloomed to any extent this season.— The first blooming of the buckwheat was during unfavorable weather, when the flowers secreted but little honey and since then there have been but few favorable days foe the bees to work. A little buckwheat lioney. has been gathered, and with good weather more may be, but still there will bo a short crop. Bee-keepers must take good care of their swa...

" Strawbeukies.—Per-ons intending to aiake strawberry plantations should how be prepareing their ground, It. should be highly manured and dug or plowed as deeply as possible, and be had in readiness to take advantage of the first good rains.— The. advantage of planting in summer or early fall is, that the plants become well established before winter, and will produce a moderate crop, perhaps sufficient to bear the expense of planting, the next season. If planted in tho spring, no fruit worth ¦ considering wUl be produced the same season. If planted now, while the weather k dry, they should be liberally watered when -planted, and every evening until they are fully established, Charcoal for Swine.—It is not, perhaps, generally known that one of the best a, tides that cun be given to swine while in preparation fbr lite- tub, is common charcoal. The nutrive properties are so great that they have subsisted on it without other food for weeks together. Geese, confined so as to deprive ...
