Harvest in Olden Times. (From the " Dundee People's Journal.") SHEARING, BINDING, AND STOOKING, Down to tho first quarter of last century the almost universal practice of reaping the crops was by the hand hook or " shearing," and in those days bafore better drainage j imd more skilful cultivation brought the '■ higher districts into earlier ripening willing i Scottish shearers were often able to get three harvests in one season. The first of Iheso whs in the Lothians, the Carse of Gowrie, and similar early districts; the nest was in Strathmore and the southern slopes of the lesser hill ranges; and then home in time for their own. The shearers came in bands from the Western Islands, the Highland glens, and latterly from Ireland, as well as from large cities and villages. Their families often came with them. The greatest vielocity, 23 L^ miles in 24 hours was noticed on the >2Qth, the lowest 4 miles on the 29th. The maximum temperature in son, 142deg., cm 29th, the lowest, 69deg. on'-'the 2Ofch. The highest in shade, 83degv on the 29fcb. The lowest, 30deg. on the 20th; 2deg. frost was registered on 20th and 21st. The barometer was phenomenally high at beginning of the month, which was 'observed at all the weather stations in the polony. At the close of the month, it registered 30.12.
