It seems however , to have furnished the basis for other scientific experiments along this line . It is now stated that two German chemists have succeeded in obtaining nitrogen from the atmosphere at a paying price . No details have been furnished , as it is stated that the process will be patented . It may mean a good deal to agriculture and it may not . Child labor has attracted a good deal of attention during the past year . Some writers have endeavored to manufacture quite a bit of sensation out of the topic . The romance , however , has been pretty well knocked out of it by the census bureau . There are , of course , many instances of hardship in some of the larger cities , and in some of the cotton ma...

% . Dairy and Live Stock 3 iiuuMffi ^^ IMPROVED COW STABLES IMFEOVEMENTS in cow stables come slowly . Thirty years ago about tlie only cow stall was either a horse .-tail or a solid stanchion made heavy and clumsy . Of the two , the horse stall was undoubtedly the best , although the manger was always too high . It is natural for cows to eat from the ground , , nl i for economy the long double stable without mangers , has been unanimously adopted amongst dairymen who keep • t large number of cows . Some forms of stanchion are still retained in most stables , but it has been very much improved . Chain ties are considered by many to be superior to the stanchion , and they doubtless are better , in giving ( ho animal freedom , but so far chain ties have not proved quite so cleanly as a stanchion , and it is very important to keep the cows clean . H . E . Van Norman , State College , Pa ., recommends a steel stanchion hung on gas p ipe supports with cement manger and floor . The expense...

The fact that it involves an extra outlay of time , labor and money , which the grower must get back with a fair marg in of profit ; that it has its liabilities of losses and failure , adds an element of uncertainty which we would reduce to the lowest possible limit . Now that the stock of 1906 has been mainly withdrawn and marketed , we aro in condition to add this season s results to the foregoing , and can write more advisedly of our experience , trusting that it may be of use to the fruit growers of the Northwest .
