The Pacific Coast Steamship Com pany's steamer arrived at her berth in this city night before last, and expected to start on the trip to Portland at dawn yesterday morning, but the Port land Colonial Assembly had neglected its duty and permitted a dense fog to settle over the land (and water) which persistently refused to lift until one o'clock p. m., which prevented the Ancon from proceeding on her voyage. Some of the passengers were indiscreet -enough to wax warm in condemnation of the pilot, Capt. Hoyt, but their comments were entirely uncalled for, -and as Mr. Hoyt as a resident of Port land cannot consistently (nor incon sistently) be accused of detaining the steamer at Astoria purposely, but this is the place she ought to stop at never theless, for the purpose of tranferring freight and passen...

Once more the year its fullness "pours To cheer the heart of toil; Once more we take with gratitude The blessing of the soil. I hear the children laugh and sing, They pull the grapes together; And gladness breathes from everything In this October weather. The winter days were long and dark, The spring was slow to come; And summer storms brought fear and doubt To many a humble home. But rain and sunshine had their will And wrought their work together, And see! we heap our baskets still, In this October weather. My heart has had its winter, too, And lain full bare and gray; I did not think a spring would come, Much less a summer day. How little did I dream that life "Would bring us two together, And I should be a happy wife In this October weather! Doubtless the frosts will come again, And some sweet hopes must die; But we shall bear the passing pain, And smile as...

i Dutch Bulbs. There are few ornaments of the flower bed or of the winter window so easily managed .-and so deservedly popular as the various Dutch bulbs, and as- this is the best time to prepare for planting them, we will have a few words to say as to their management. The bulbs may be planted in October those that start early " should be planted first, such as Snow drops and Crocuses. And first as to out of door planting. The spot chosen for the bed should be sheltered from the cold winds of spring, so that the first warm, sunny days in March may bring up the Crocuses and Snowdrops in a joyous promise of com ing spring.
