(.Courier Journal.] Big Stone Gap, Va., March 17-A telegram has been received here from Richmond say? ing that the celebrated case of Dr. Bailey against the South Atlantic and Ohio rail? road has been decided by the Supreme Court favorably on every point to the rail? road. Dr. J. M. Then making a favorahlo lease front the State of the necessary number of convicts (being even, it has been stated paid for feeding and clothing them for ihc first year or so and at no time paying over forty or fifty cents a day for them), he built and equipped forty miles of the road as a broad-gauge at a cost not exceedi...

SHARPER'S SE3rVENCED. j They Robbed German Emigrants En Route to America. Berlin, April 3.?Franz Lieftuchcr and Johann Paulus have been sentenced re? spectively to four and two years imprison? ment at Trevce for swindling. This is the result of the efforts of the authorities to break up a gang of sharpers who have for a long time thrived by cheating Ger? man emigrants waiting at the various ports on the eve of embarking for Ameri? ca. The principal operations of Licf tucher and Paulus were carried on at Antwerp and Rotterdam. Their victims were numerous, and many emigrants ar? rived in New York penniless in conse? quence of having encountered the crooks before leaving port. The swindling was generally done by sharp practice at cards. In addition to their imprisonment which they must undergo, the men are con? demned to lose their civil rights for five years. -? - NEW ORLEANS SMITTEN. A Distinguished Cotton Fire in That City.
