$00 &ngrtai §tv\M. ... Gleanings. Mr. Murray says that this is his fourth visit to Egypt, and each year he finds the wretchedness greater. The deplorable aspect ef the people, who in many places have that pinched look which only long-continued starvation can give, largely takes away from the pleas ure of travelling on the Nile. At Girgeth he found tbat the children's food was sugar cane, previously eucked by others. St. Louis shysters must be hard up. The Republican of that city printed something about somebody resembling a libel, and the person referred to was visited within a brief period by no less than forty different lawyers, who solicited germission to institute a suit. The uprerue Court of Missouri has de cided tbat a lawyer offering to com mence a suit without compensa tion is guilty of champerty, and liable to line and imprisonment. Tho Supreme Court of Rhode Island, having been consulted by the Governor in regard to (beright of a husband to vote by virtue of his intere...

The Constitutional Convention. There la evidently a strong move ment in both parties towards a joint non-partizan ticket for mem bers of the Constitutional Conven tion. Much can be said in favor of such a project in ordinary times. Each party is apt to be on its met al and to urge into prominence its very beet men. To the extent to which this generous rivalry may be excited the result is beneficial. It has been known to work happily in several instances, notably in the last Constitutional Conventions of New York and Pennsylvania. In both of those cases, however, there was a provision in the acts calling tbe Convention which secured an equality of representation to each of the great natio...

From Mr. J. McFadden, one of tlio proprietors of the steamer New port, we gather a full circumstan tial account of the casualty at New port Landing last Thursday, which resulted in the drowning of Cap tain Pierce and three of his men. As this account corrects a number of erroneous statements which have crept into former reports and gives a number of new details not presented heretofore we take occasion to present it entire, reviewing some points already well known. About daylight Thursday morn ing, the Newport dropped anchor about half a mile off tbe breakers at the Landing, tbe roughness of tbe water preventing a nearer ap proach. Tbe f...
