V to plaut cotton sufficient to purchase our1 army supplies or we ruin ourselves. It is mortifying indeed to see such a state of outlawry existing in so many portions of our State. Jaybawkers and highway- men rule many portions of our State, they . are becoming bolder in their depredations Xdaily, and seem to cure nothing for the au- thorities. ▲ few days ago a wagon train ni robbed within a few miles of this city of $30,000, the train oontained $44,000, and the ra8cala could not carry it all, they filled their saddle bags with as much a> they could pack and fled. No one here has any idea who the rascals are, and they may at any day dash into this city and perform the same operation. Scarcely a day passes but what news is brought here of the doings of these highwaymen. Their route seems to be between here and the Rio Qrande, and they are supposed to be a porti n of the same gang that created such terror near Austin and in Williamson county a few months ago. -"A, Whose duty is it ...
