style stage Dramatic retrospection From Charles Busch to Oscar Wilde, North Texas' best theater in 2004 y Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer People can differ in their opinions, especially regarding the arts. Whether 2004 was a great year for theater or just adequate is really up to you. But there were some standouts on Metroplex stages this year, and here they are. 1. Red Scare on Sunset (Uptown Players). In the past few years, Charles Busch has not been merely in evidence, he's been inevitable. The best local pro- duction of on of his plays, "Red Scare on Sunset" was the year's most deliciously funny romp, and one not nearly as inane as the title suggests. Coy Covington, who played 1950s-era starlet Mary Dale, stole the show, but the entire cast was excellent. 2. Big River (Dallas Summer Musicals). The national tour of this Broadway revival seemed like an oxymoron: A musical with a predominantly deaf cast. That ended up being merely the most disarming quality of this lovely and lovin...

life+stylefitness Gaily skating around the rink Need a healthy New Year's resolution? Roll with DFW Rainbow Skaters IT'S WHEELY, WHEELY FUN: Robbie Martin, left, and Jayson Pruitt met two years ago at a DFW Rainbow Skate night. By Robert Ross Contributing Writer "Skating instills a sense of nostalgia in peo- ple,'' Jayson Pruitt says about his weekly trip to the rink. "It takes me back to my teenage years.™ That's reason enough to join DFW Rainbow Skate on Wednesday nights at Grand Prairie's Forum Roller World. "It's also a great place to meet people. That's where I met my partner, Robby Martin, two years ago."" Pruitt adds. In September, he and Martin volunteered to organize Rainbow Skate and took the reigns from the former leader, whose work schedule interfered with continued involvement. With proper safety equipment, skating is healthy — just the right activity to fulfill those physical fitness fantasies that arise every New Year. With favorite tunes from the '80s or a dash of di...

from Connecticut, discovered a sporty social cir- cle at Outboard, an annual gay snowboarding event held at different resorts each season. "I absolutely loved it," Micari says. Taking to the board after a lifetime of skiing wasn't a problem for Micari. "There's an elitism with skiing that just isn't there in the boarding community," he says. Micari found that fellow boarders were forth- coming with advice and support. "It's easy to make a fool of yourself when you're learning to snowboard, but easier to laugh it off when you're with the right people," he con- tinues. Like a lot of gay men, Micari seeks out events in the global gay community but, "a lot of gay events seem to be focused on economics — big expensive parties and the right outfits," he says. "For me, gay boarding events foster a sense of brotherhood." Having found a community of gay snow- boarders, Micari looks forward to OutBoard 2005, its 10th year, which will be held Mar. 30- Apr. 3 at the Keystone Resort in Colorado....

t do this week stage Texan® get a taste of 'Oklahoma!' Reasonable people can disagree about what qualifies as the first mod- ern American musical, but even if you don't consider "Oklahoma!" the font from which this native art form flowed, there is no denying its enduring appeal. The plot is a simple Western romance set near the turn of the last century. But this first collabora- tion of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II is a full-fledged classic, with standards like "Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "People Will Say We're in Love," "Poor Jud is Daid" and the title song. This production features openly gay actor Daniel Robinson in the central role of Will Parker.
