A Berlin dispatch to the London Times says the pope has indirectly expressed a wish for a compromise with Russia and Germany. Sixty quarts of strawberries, the first shipment this year, were sent north from Charleston, S. C., last Saturday. The sub-committie of the senate railroad committee has reported unanimously in favor of extending the time for the completion ot the Northern Pacific railroad eight years. A Washington correspondent says there is legal machinery at work to stave off a decision in the Arlington case for at least two years. In the meantime the owners will be com- pensated by congress. mm ws. The Sailg mews. DENISON, WEDNESDAY MARCH 20, 1878. Conspicuous in the Greenback convention at Austin was Judge C. T. Garland, of Jefferson notoriety, who was one of Gen. Buell's leading advisers, and the front of the military despotism. The J implecutc says that at a meet- \ ing of the directors of the East Line and Red River railroad, 011 Monday \ evening, it was "resolved that twen- ty miles more of road in the direc- tion ofSulpur Springs be immedi- ately built. The managers of the road are determined to complete it to that point by fall. The Marshal Herald says Philip Phillips alluded, in his lecture in that town, to the statement oi the Dallas Mail concerning him, and stated further that he was never in Texas before his present visit, and had never in all his life written an article of any kind for the newspapers. The Heraid suggests that an explanation on the part of the Mail is now in or- der. The Atlanta Constitution is authority for similar criticisms of Philip Phill...

the Daily news. DENlioNi FRIDAY MARCH jj, 1878. Should the Resumption Act be Re- pealed P The beneficial result* of the pas- sage of the silver bill are greater than its most sanguine advocates hoped for. It is proving such a fi- nancial relief to the country, that it behooves our representatives at j Washington to look well into the 1 question, as to whether the lesump- tion act should be repealed or not! liefore the passage of this bill, re sumption would have inflicted untold injury on the debtor classes of the country, and could only have been regarded as an act of- extreme injus- tice to them by any one not biased by self interest in the question, for it meant payment in gold alone. But they are now provided with a cheap- er metal to pay with, a metal that presents the anomalous fact of being cheaper than the currency to be re- deemed. Our supply of this metal is al- most unlimited ;it can never be man- ipulated, as was the smaller supply of gold in the country by moneyed rings....
