Critic's choice April 6 1990 the Brand I I: i Reviews by Rick Hope Duane SimoiKe ana twan jonos movies Irhe Hunt For Red October I have yet to see a Sean Connery movie I didn't like. I've enjoyed watching this talented actor in the first "James Bond " movies and most recently applauded his per- formance as Harrison Ford's father in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." I honestly don't think the man has ever done a bad job of acting in any of-his movies. " The Hunt for Red October" is no exception. " In "Red October" Connery plays a Soviet submarine captain in charge of a new Russian sub- marine named you guessed it the Rflri October. This submarine Is i the finest of its kind and was designed for one purpose-to wage nuclear war against the United States. However the good captain and his officers see things a little dif- ferently from the Kremlin. They plan on using the submarine to defect to the United States. To do this Connery has to kill the Soviet political officer on their shi...

Minorities must be individuals by Calvin Ford "Calvin why aren't you like most black people?" This is a question that has haunted me since my freshman year at Hardln-Slmmons. I am very well aware that I am black and yes I am proud to be black. Everyone should be proud of thoir color. God made us and He does not make junk. If someone could show me the correct way black people act then they deserve a hero cookie. However the answer Is impossible. I have been talking to and tak- ing surveys of several college students about minorities. They all believe that minorities are stereotyped. Why are we stereotyped? The reason is Ig- norance. All of my life I have struggled with several things. This has to be the worst. Sometimes I have things happen to me because of the color of my skin but I don't let It bother me. Racism Is a re...

May 4 1990 the Brand c.ll.1 Staff view editorials Opinions Artists should gain interests by Duane Slmolke Once again we're hearing peo- ple cry censorship. The govern- ment has decided not to sponsor artwork considered obscene or of- fensive and it has been in the news for months now. When people start getting an- noyed about how their tax dollars are spent the government gets hesitant about where some of its funding for the arts goes. This upsets some people particularly arists but it is NOT censorship. The National Endowment for the Arts Is an important organization. The arts are part of a culture's heritage and identity. We need the artswe need to support them and we heed to teach them in our schools. What We don't need is anyone telling us "This Is art and you will sponsor it or be called a self- righteous censoring closed- minded idiot." What we don't need is-' "condescending attitudes--not even" t'otoard those who don't see the Value of any art. As Americans we have choices. W...

Critic's choice May 4 1990 th Brand 7. Reviews by Ewart Jones and Duane.SlmoIke books The Christening by Roger Elwood The author of AngalWalk the novel about an angel who comes to Earth to see the results of Satan's work has released a. novel about a small town that becomes Involved In occult activity and the pastor who realizes he's partially to blame. Like AngslWalk Elwwod's new novel Is written as entertaining fantasy and as an explanation and warning of evil. Though shocking and Insightful AngalWalk Is a sim- ple fable with only a few characters. Elwood tries to transfer too much of that novel's simplistic style into a more complicated novel with many characters. The demonic conversations that preceed each chapter are boring and contrived. What works in the novels of C.S. Lewis and Frank E. Peretti won't necessarily work In every novel with a blatantly Chris- tian message.' Fortunately the demon passages are brief and can be skipped without the reader missing anything. Another p...

Sports May 4 1990 the Brand 8 Errors cost Cowboys in final losses bv Ewart Jones Errors cost the Cowboys as they lost to the Gents of Centenary 7-6 in the Cowboys final game of the season. It was a less than auspicious ending to one of the more interesting baseball cam- paign's HSU has seen In recent years. Considering coaching changes pitching changes and in- juries the Cowboys did well to post at 16-41 overall record and a 3-13 record in Trans America Athletic Conference play. Centenary was the top seed in the Western Divison during the TAAC tournament and it showed why. The Gents capitalized on Cowboy miscues and came away with the victory in the bottom of the 12th inning. Starting pitcher Terry Suggs had an outstanding performance but came away with no decison. Suggs pitching for the last time in his collegiate career lasted eight innings allowing five hits and striking out eight Centenary batters. Suggs ran into trouble during the second Inning. but kept the Gents scoreless for...

The Brand Fletcher Discusses Changes by Duanc Simolkc "Tliis is a big year for us" said Dr. Jesse C. Fletcher president of HSU at a press con- ference for local media. Besides being HSU's 100th birthday this is also Fletcher's last year as president. A search committee has begun seeking applica- tions for his replacement but the process of elimination won't end until near the end of the academic year. Fletcher's plans to step down surprised the HSU community during the summer but he isn't leaving. "As the new Chancellor I'll be teaching part-time and assisting the new president" said Retcher who is a professor of religion. He is also the author of several bxks and he plans to spend more time writing. Fletcher also noted changes in student enrollment partially attributing the new num- bers to HSU's return to football and more generally its increased emphasis on campus life.
