SUPREME COURT. TUESDAY, DEC. 20, 1825. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 24 December 1825

SUPREME COURT.       Tuesday, Dec, 20, 1825.                   The several prisoners who had been tried and found guilty, during the Session,     were this morning brought into Court to receive the sentence of the law. Twenty- eight, who had been convicted of the heaviest offences, were first brought into court. They were manacled two by two, and the clanging of their chains along the ground as they took their stand and arranged themselves at the bar, and within the rails, presented a scene truly abhor- rent to those not accustomed to sights of human depravity. Mr. Spode, the clerk of the Court, then called on each by   name to say why sentences of death should not be passed upon him. Priest answered     he had nothing at all to say, and left himself entirely at the...

THE BUSHRANGERS. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 24 December 1825

THE BUSHRANGERS.       ~~~ It appears that when the party of soldiers and others, as mentioned in earlier, came in front of Mr. Meredith's hut, at which the bushrangers had a little before they instantly threw off their knapsacks, and pursued them with all possible speed. Having, however, travelled hard since daylight that morning, and being wet to the middle in walking through the lagoon, to keep pace with them. Inconsequence, the robbers soon vanished from their sight, into a thick bushy part of the woods, and all clue to the course they had taken was lost. It would appear, therefore, that the party, had acted prudently in making the best of its way back to Mr. Amos's farm, where it was known the robbers had made an appointment to meet Murphy and Cody,     and towards which they had in fact gone   in their escape. Besides their blankets which they had left behind them about eight miles off on the other s...
