GREAT EARTHQUAKE IN NEW GRANADA. From the S. M. Herald, of the 21st instant. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 8 September 1875

GREAT EARTHQUAKE IN NEW GRANADA. From the <S. Jlf. Herald, of the 21st instant. I MARACAIBO, May 29.-On the morning of the 21th instant, this community was startled by the appaling news, of the entire destruction by earthquake of the city of San Jose do Cuouta in Columbia, on the 18th instani, at half-paet 11a m. The first shock, accompanied by loud subterra nean detonations, levelled every wall in the city, and buired trader its ruins in that single iUBtant of time some 8,000 human beings out of a population of 10,000 souls, and of those then spared many have sinoe died of thoir injuries, and others remain seriously affected in mind. The aooount given by the unhappy beines who have fled the doomed spot and are daily arri ving here, is harrowing in the extreme, The first care of the few saved, and after they could collect their shattered senses, was to snooour those whose shrieks for aid filled the air on every side; bnt their efforts in many cases were rendered futile by...

Cricket Match. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 8 September 1875

Cricket Match THE match bet*e<m the Charter® Towers and Queenton teams came off op Saturday afternoon od the Charters Towers Cricket Gronad. The day was well adapted for play, a fine breeze blowing the whole time. Thew was a large attendance of miners on the ground, and Mr Pasquaie Nigro had a comfortable rrbour, where he dispensed " refreshers " to all comer* and was well patronised. The pla/ of the Towers men was feeble throagbout, evidencing a sad want of practice. Mr Speed's bowling was first class, but not equal to that of tfr Grey on the other aide. The fielding was very Indifferent. Though the Queenton men lost'their best bat Mr Boyle-at the first ball, they won a com paratively easy victory, having 16 wickets to spare. The result of this match ought to stimu late the Towers team to more earnest play. There is ho royal road to euccess in cricket, any more thin there is io learning. Like the poet's crown, the cricketer's victory must be won by' adopting the Horatian...

The Victorian Education Act A correspondent of the Telegraph, over the name " Cassandra," writing of the working of the Victorian Education Ac'., say*. "Itmt late arriva\ in this great country of Queensland, and to make myself ac quainted with its politics, I visited the House of Assembly last Friday evening to bear the adjourned debate upon the Educa tion Bill. I was rather taken by surprise (as a resident for a number of years in the adjourciug colony of Viatoria) at the re marks made by the lion, member for the Kennedy with reference to the working of the Education Act of 1872 in that colony. The lion- gentleman prefaced bis remarks by reading extracts from the Kyneton Observer to prove that the working of the Act had become inoperative, and instanced several districts wherein it was stated that in conecpuenos of its adoption the State schools were a failure. I may inform the hon. gentleman that the Oigeroer and Ad vocate, the organ of the Gatholia party, are the only two papers ...

MELBOURNE. September 4. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 8 September 1875

MELBOURNE. September 4. The Minister for Education states that to fulfil the promises already made for the erection of school houses £300,000 would be required.   The Exhibition was opened yesterday. There   were 5000 persons present.   Towers receiving letter (sic.) Bank of Vic- toria, has been remanded for embezzling £1400;   he partially admits his guilt. His arrest will   probably lead to the recovery of stolen notes to   the amount of two thousaud pounds.   The hospital meeting called for 7.30 last night lapsed for want of a quorum; present, Messrs     Tierney, Cusack and Foley.   A trotting match came off on the race course   on Saturday last, between Mr Mossman'e Baron and a horse of Mr Johnson's for £5 aside. The Baron won easily. The North Australian Hotel has been let to Mr Hugh Connolly, who has caught the Towers fever and come up ...
