BIRD POISONING. BY JOHN DOUGLAS, IT THE " LEADER.' The following will be found of interest to the various orchardists in the district : The first step in the direction of bird poisoning successfully is to find where they are in the habit of congre gating to feed. But in the event of there being no such spot in particular, the most likely spot for forming a decoy centre should be selected, where feed should be laid down, say, chaff, with a mixture of grain., The chaff is Inecessary to prevent the birds obtain ing the decoy food too easily, especially until they have formed a habit of swarming at the decoy spot to feed. When this stage in the proceedings is arrived at, the course is clear. 1st. Feed the birds for a few days with good grain mixed with chuff, the chaff to prevent the grain from being picked too readily. 2nd. After thus feeding for a few days, reduce the quantity of grain by three-fourths, mixing only as much grain as will induce the birds to return to the decoy spot in ...

The following report from the Mining Manager, just to hand, is published for .the information of the shareholders: At the mine, matters are progress ing very well; the new lode at the 120 feet level continues to open up splen didly, in fact, I am now thoroughly satisfied that we have opened up a new lode. entirely distinct from anything which so far has been disclosed on the surface. One of the peculiar features in con nection with the new lode is, that the strike is-north-west by-south-east, with an-underlay to the north-east at an angle of.45- degrees..
