A Maryborough Cat-astrophe. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 25 July 1885

A Maryborough Cat-astrophe. , - ^ The head office of the Post and Telegraph depart ment his been thrown into cacchinatory convulsions by an official report concerning a pair of cats,,owned by the manager of the Maryborough telegraph office. That veteran lightning-grinder is an old sailor named Eldridge — a shipmate of Matveiff-'s, so he says—who, by sheer force of habit, rules his office /•with the same petty tyranny and objurgatory - language which he probably found useful when boss ing the second mate's watch in the halcyon days of his youth. Touching the cats, however. I judge Elrox#fthe document which has produced almost a catalepsy in the head office, that old Eldridge is not blessed with a family, and, following the practice observed by other old women similarly barren, em ploys cats as the objects on which to expend his affection. The document referred to, pretty well explains itself. 1 have been favored with a perusal • of it, and though I do not pretend to remember every wo...

GOSSIP. (FRENCH AND ENGLISH SOURCES.) [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 25 July 1885

, aos.sip. I (FRENCH AND ENGLISH SOURCES.) You. seem so pleased with your pretty, well-cut, , close-fitting French gloves, dearladies> that we may as well tell you that they are as likely as not macte out of the skins of sewer rats. The Paris Municipal Coun^il offer a jlarge premium perthousand, and the skins' are afterwards sold to the Grenoble glove makers for about three-halfpence or twopence each. A sewer i at might therefore exclaim; with Borneo, h&hd!'' and have some reasonable hope of the .desire being ultimately ■ realised. ■ ■ '• — ' ....... ■■. According to some of the Prjench and Italian papers, there have been; fifty suicides of ruined gamblers at" Monte. Carlo in about five weeks. This is not difficult of explanation. , The Cercle des Etrangers is in the habit of giving "'subventions" to various journals, but, as it has not had a good season, it has reduced,. or withdrawn, many of these payments. Hence it follows that scribes who used to warmly appreciate the...
