CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. TOWN HALL CLOCK. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 10 January 1896

CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. TOWN HALL CLOCK.. (To the Editor.) SiR,-In reference to the paragraph in your last issue re the chiming of the bells at the festive time of the year you are altogether wrongly informed. All the chiming in the world would never interfere with the clock in any way whatever. When reporting to the Council the condition of the clock, I was nsked whether the chiming interfered with the "going," and I told them distinctly no. I was also present when a councillor in the council chamber asked the sauic question from one of the most expert in the trade, and received the same answer as I gave. I sincerely trust that the above will settle this old cackle once and for all.-Yours, &c., P. B. McMASTER.

THE CHAIRMAN'S COMPLAINT. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 10 January 1896

TIIUE OIAIRBAN'S COMPLAINT. ALLUSION was nade in these columns some time ago to Dn. LLoYD's com plaints as to the time.wasted by solici tors in the North Melbourne Court; but there is another annoyance and cause of delay which the above Justice has alluded to, and which crops up very fre queniiy.-. Some- time ago his honor JUDGE HAMILTos, in the County Court, waxed very iiidiigit over whl t he con sidered was an attempt to turn that tribunal into a debt collecting agency, and very rightly reprobated the practice of using the court to save paying .the income of a collector... In the same way we think the magistrates should frown down the action of certain "silly wo men "-a scriptural expression by-the by-who persistently drag every do mestic brawl, arising from a badly cooked dinner or a few hasty words, into the police court, and who, after describ ing their husbands to the police as fully developed Deemings, tearfully assure the magistrates that "they wish to withdraw. "the charge....

All that day I, in my capacity as sole passenger, occupied the box seat, next to the driver, and I was now fairly knocked u1p. Australian language must surely take its tone from Australian landscape, otherwise how can its lack of variety, its unpicturesqueness, illimitability, and awe inspiring vigor be accounted for? There were-.no - artistic orditinstinctepoints about my guide's monologus, but they at Ainy rate coinnarided my unflagging attention throughout the weary twenty four hours of our last stage, between Mur rurmidi on the borders .of New South Wales and our destination, Quibara, a remote bush township of Western Queensland. Our team had been traversing miles of level country after heavy rain, and judging.from the sullei .elolids which scowled overhead during the whole of our journey, we did well in reaching shelter before the storm burst afresh. CRICKET NOTES. Secretaries kindly send in their Results not later than Tuesday Erenings, to secure insertion. Please place same in Editor's Box. By 1HRTON. NORTH MELBOURNE v. ST. KILDA. THERE whS again a large attendance at the St. Kilda Cricket Ground on Saturday last to witness the continuation of this match. The weather was beautiful, and the wicket a fairly good one. Jack Carlton and Gerber resumed their places, at, the wickets to the bowling of MShuane-and- Fesnton.-The batsmen had apparently come to stay, for, notwithstanding several changes of bowling, they were still going at the adjournment for "afternoon tea "-Carlton being 06, and Gerber 92. A separation was effected, how ever, soon after the re'umption of the game, Gerber, who only wanted six to complete his century, made a fearful whang at a ball half way .up the pitch, the ball taking a perpendicular course in the air, and fell into the hands of Ahern-the total score then being 237. PERMISKUS PARS." (Bry Ro?s.) A local pawnbroker_points with pride to the precocious genius of a confrere's son, aged about twelve years. The father had, made his pile, and built :i. splendid mansion in a southern suburb, replete with all the luxuries of. Austra lian plutocracy. Billiard tables, conser vatories, a library, and numerous other evidences of comfort were included in the establishment.
