SAD AND FATAL ACCIDENT. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 14 March 1882

SAD AND FATAL ACCIDENT. A very melancholy accident happened at Eagle Point Bay on Sunday after- noon, resulting in the death of a lad named William Arthur Horton, aged 12 years. The deceased and some other lads were bathing about four o'clock in the afternoon, when young Horton got out of his depth, and as he was sinking sang out, " Oh! I'm drowning." A lad named Woodman swam to his rescue, and notwithstanding that he was dragged under water by the drowning youth, made heroic efforts to save him, until compelled to release his hold to prevent himself being drowned. Young Hos- kins then went to Horton's assistance, and he, in his plucky attempts to save his companion, narrowly escaped drown- ing. Assistance soon arrived, and the poor youth was brought out of the water, but although every means were used to restore animation they were found to be futile, as life was extinct. The deceased was a son of Mr. Horton, of Sale, and was on a visit to his relative, Mr. Hos- kins. - A magisteri...
