TURF TOPICS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 31 July 1914

.TURF TOPICS. (By "Plemington.")' - _A. recent count showed that the. hor ses .in work at Flemington and Caul fikeld number in all something like 650. Probably another hundred can be found on the private and other training quarters round about the city. We are thus well off for horses.. to carry on .racing about Melbourne in the new season. . It would at the end of next July be interesting to know how many of these horses have *-ever paid their way for the 12,months. Only a comparatively small percentage can possibly do this. The majority must fail more or less. But even the unlucky owners hang on as long as possible in theo hope of their horses developing form that will compensate for all previous disappoint ments. Now and again, the reward is sufficient -to compensate, but in most cases, the owner never receives 'the return that his enterprise . should merit. It is puzzling why proved bau horses are -kept going 'month after month and sometimes season after sea son, but it is so. O...

WOMEN'S INTERESTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 31 July 1914

WOMEN'S INTERESTS. (By "Ambrosine.") "Leaves From a Housekeeper a Book" is esesntially an English book, but while we can't perhaps follow up some of .the advice given it is well worth our while to read the book, for it is as refreshing and uncommon as a housewife's confabulation- with a wise mother. 'Philosophy is tucked into many a leaf that might seem to the polite and distant mistress of servants merely -a recital of house-keeping ex periences. / Over twenty years ago, -it may be said, this. anonymous writer published "From Kitclhen to Garret," a book that ran into eleven editions, and the present is the outcome of numberless requests for another. "I hope," says the writer in a preface, "that some day-conditions will be even easier than they are now, when many things. are specialised, and housekeeping is made so mechanical that it has ceased to be. an art." So much is there packed into the book in over three hundred. pages that the only wise thing for the reviewer is to cull a fe...

CLOVER WITH WHEAT. FODDER FOR SHEEP. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 7 August 1914

CLOVER WITH WHEAT.. FODDER .F OR SHEEP: The value of red-'clover as hay. crop sowin with the wheat has been proved at the Glen Innes Experimental Farm New South Wales, whdre - the practice is followed of broadcasting about 101b of seed six weeks or so after wheat is up,- merely running the har row over the young crop before sowing the clover. ' fter the wheat har vest, the clover is cut' as a hay crop, and its value is exemplified in that at Glen Innes, during the 'early part of the past winter, some 200 sheep, chief ly eight months old weafers, were fed on red clover hay at thi rate of 11b a head a day. "The sheep took to the hay -readily, and more than held their own on this class of feed. In the feeding, it was simply scattered about in the paddocks, and the sheep picked it up off the ground. The cost work ed out at just under one half-penny a head a day.' The only expenses were the cutting, marking and stacking.

THROWING AWAY FAT. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 7 August 1914

THROWING AWAY FAT. Some farmers are queer. " They think a dollar spent for Hoard's dairy man is wasted. But they will thr3ow away nearly a pound of butter fat a day because they do not handle their farm separator as it should, be handled. This has been proved in numerous in stances. They do, this because they do not know what they are about. In three days they have wasted butterfat enough to. have paid for a.paper a year that would have told them better. Good knowledge -is. always a good In vestment. Ignorance always costs more than knowledge. Get out of the shadow into the -sunlightf where 7ou can see what is going on;
