THE SHIPPING INTEREST. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 20 February 1841

TiHE SHIPPING INTEREST. It would ptuzz!e a politician to tell what sort of government we are under at Geelong. Our opinion is, that it is tn oligarchical anarchy; that is to say, in plain Enlibh, we don't know what it is. 'his is a town, and yet it is not a towni In reality it is the third seaport in New South 'Wales-yet there are no regulations here diff-rent from what are applicable to the Ninety mile Beach. This is a thriving bui:ling c, mmunity,-aud yet the most essential of the Acts for regu lating towns are not extended thither. The importance of Corio will not be believed, until it over comes all dfliculcies, and forces itself upon public notice, notwith standing the' nglect which at pre sct keeps it in a btate of backward, ness. The shipping interests of the Dis trict are second only to its grazing interests, and are a matter of still more immediate concern to the townspeople. The difficulties thrown in the way of commerce are worthy of. a government of Chinese bar. barians....

STEAM. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser — 20 February 1841

STEAM.-The Port Phillip Steam Navigation Company's first steamer the Aphrosia, has been detained at Williamsa river much longer than was expected through the drunkenness and neglect of the shipwrights, but she may now be very shortly expect- ed. A letter dated Sydney, 6th in- stant, received by the overland mail, from the Sydney Agents (with a pe- rusel of which we have been favored) says :---'The Aphrais is loaded at Newcastle on account of the builder, who delivers her in Sydney, and we are hourly looking for her arrival. No time shall be lost when she comes up in getting Mr Coke to fix and com- plete the engines, but time is slipping by very provokingly, owing to the   trouble and delay caused by the ras- cally shipwrights," The Directors of the Steam Navigation Cumpany have purchased from the owners of the Clonmnel the store ship Samuel Cu- nard, to form a depot for the Aphra- sia. The Tamar, a Sydney steamer, has also heen offered on very reason- able terms.-Patrio...
