TENNYSON—CHRISTIAN AND POET. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News — 5 November 1892

TE 1UNYSON - CIIRISTIAN POET. AND The Rev. C. Fl'ord lectured on the above last Sunday. Il r?inarked : I suspect that most of us know Tenryson by his patriotic ballads like "The Bala clava Charge," and "'Hands All Round," but not so many as a Christian poet. Not that Tennyson has written much, hardlly anything, indeed, on profusely religious topics. Unlike both Words worth and Keble, who have, one in the "Christian Year, " and the other in his 'Ecclesiastical Sonnets, endeavourPe to give a systematic poetical treatment of great religious institutions and beliefs, Tennyson has almost always- kept to objects wshiih . are either .historical or plhilobs~phical or contemplative. A STRANGE CHAIN OF EVENTS. CHAPTER VII. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News — 5 November 1892

A STRANGE CHAIN OF EVENTS.     CHAPTER VII. An Irishman ? I exclaimed. Non- sense ; I've been too much among   Irishmen not to know one when     I meet him. Where ? In Ireland ? Yes. I thought so, said Appleton. That's where you're out of it. An Irish- Irishman is one thing ; an American Irishman is a horse of another colour. That fellow, Westerfeldt, is an   American - Irishman. We have   thousands of them in America. But Westerfeldt isn't an Irish name, I urged. No, more it is. But it sounds better than Shaughnessy or O'Rafferty,     and a man with it is apt to be taken for a scion of one of the Knicker- bocker families of Manhattan Island,   don't you see ? A man may call him- self what he likes. But he's got no brogue, I persisted, still unsatisfied. He talks like an American. No he doesn't, said Appleton. You   think so, of course; but w...

NEWS IN BRIEF. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News — 12 November 1892

NEWS IN BRIEF. The weather lately has been ex ceptionally rainy for this time of the year. The creeks have been running bankers and a number of crops have suffered greatly. The concert at the Mechanics's In stitute passed off very successfully on Tuesday evening. The " talent" were in good form and were well received. It is thought that " Jack the Ripper' has been discovered in the shape of a man named Alois Szemeredy, the Vienn t murderer, who committed suicide a: Pressburg a few days ago. This is about the 50th time the newspaper men have discovered the notorious " White chapel Murde:er," in varous parts of the world, so we are inclined to the belief that he is still at large and are of the ouinion that rumor has lied once more. A fishing party proceeded to the Deep Creek near Mr Feehan's on Wednesday, the 9th of November, Prince of Wales' Birthday, and although the creek was running strongly the anglers were sue. cessful in landing some fine black fish. and a few eels. It has bee...

BULLA BULLA. Thursday. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News — 12 November 1892

BULLA BULLA. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thursday. Heavy rains fellhere on Saturday last filling the channels and creeks up to the banks. A tremendous volume of water rushed down the Deep Creek, and itwas gravely feared we would be visited with heavy floods. The deluge seems to have been universal for I hear reports of the excessive pluvial weather from all parts of the country. During the week more rain has fallen and the crops, particu larly on the low lying flats, have suffered keenly. The grand bazzar, in aid of the St Monica's school fund, Essendon, in which so many people around this district were very much interested. closed on TuvsSay evening, after having been open for 12 nights. All the time the weather was most unfavourable. It is anticipated the takings will reach £800 ... It_ i.. calculated that the expenses will reach £100, so that £700 clear balance will be the result. Considering everything this is satisfactory.

MACEDON. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News — 12 November 1892

M1ACEDON. [FRno OUR OWN COREESPONDENT].' Foxes are becoming v.ry plentiful iiil this district. On Wednesday two woodcutters got three, about half-grown, in a burrow about half a mile from the township. Another party has got a litter of eight and the mother. On Saturday last the heaviest down fall of rain seen for many years in this district took place. The creeks were quickly flooded and much damage was done, any fences coming within their area being washed away. In one instance a field lately ploughed was swept quite clean, the subsoil being deposited along the flats. At Mr Hogg's prune orchard, lately finished, a great quantity of the young trees were washed out of the ground. Old residents say that this is the largest flood seen in this district for a great many years. The match, Kyneton United against Macedon, which was to have been played on the ground of the latter on Saturday last was postponed owing to the heavy rain, most of the grounds being under water.

BALL AT THE MECHANICS' INSTITUTE. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News — 12 November 1892

IIAi,l AT THE Mi'CIIANICS' INSTI rUTE. The ball par excllence of the year ln.ld in Sunbury, came off at the Melchanics' Hall on Wednersday evening in honor and celebration of the termination of the local Quadrille Assembly's season. The weather during the afternoon and towards the dusk of the evening 'was in a must unpropitious condition and fears were entertained that the dance would turn out anything but the brilliant success it did. The rain continued to pour down "almost without . intermission, lbut the ardent lovers of Terpsichore, jolity and fun, reinrined undaunted, and by the toll of 9 o'clock the hall vas completely filled. It is only now and againi we hav.r a fancy, dress ball here. but this one was arranged to suit. all tastes, coaming under the heading " ..of=" Plain, Fancy, and Masquerade," proving su:ceesful, in spite of Jupiter Pluvius, in every feature. The management of the proceedings fell to the lot of the popular committee 1Miessrs Lee, Breen, T. Heffernan, and A...

ENTERTAINMENT AT THE HALL. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News — 12 November 1892

ENTERTAINMENT AT THE HALL. - The annual p;rochial entertainment, in connection with St. Mary's Church of England, inaugurated by the R-v W. C. Ford, was hell at the Mechanics' Hall on Tuesday, the riverend gentleman presiding. The building was comfortably filled, all the sittingroosm beint taken up, although the attendance was not so large as that of previous years, which was undoubtedly due to the abolition of dancing from the evening's amusement and the preparations for the attractive Plain, Fancy and Masquerade Ball, to be celebrated on the following evening. 'The night was close and muggy. The arrary of talent present to assist in the entertainment was chi'efly of local fame, only a very few vocalists from other places being present. The, proceedings opened up with " `glee entitled, "See- outr.. oars' :;with' feathered spray" by the church choir, under the conductoirship of the Rev Ford. The piece was well given out and indicated a deal of reheai'sing, training and culture. Mrs ...
