^octaf anb (Beneraf, The twenty-fifth anniversary of the accession to the throne of Sweden and Norway by King Oscar II. was celebrated on Saturday in a becoming manner by the Scandinavian residents of Sydney. In the morning the Swedish Consul, Mr. C. A. Falstedt, held a recep tion at his private residence and Consular office in Phillip-street, and a large number of citizens called to pay their respects to the Consul, and to express their wishes that the cordial relations existing between Eng land and the Scandinavian nation would remain undisturbed throughout the reign of King Oscar- II. The health of his Majesty was pledged in bumpers of champagne, and many appreciative remarks were made respecting King Oscar of Sweden and Norway — his constant desire to maintain their union by commanding the love and esteem of both people, and his generous and enlightened assistance given to advance the cause of science ; whilst Mr. Falstedt's colleagues in the Consular Service expressed in hearty...

? :raiB nwwty urm tn^.traa Our Father, our King ! renew unto us a good year. TiiE New Year will be ushered in with all its potential religious solemnity on the evening of tne 26th inst. Already we discern the nation in its humility and prayer— pleading with fervor and earnestness for the acceptance of its devo tion. How many are reviewing the past year — its ambitions and trials, jr.ys and pleasures, Borrows ana nearcaunes, vuws auu. pwgco. These memories crowd fast one upon another— the plans and arrangements for a positive re newal of the many duties so long neglected ; how we intended to advance our commercial position, assist in communal work, and advance the cause of Judaism so far as in our power lay. Then the greetings to our friends visiting among us ; the happy gatherings we attended ; ? the marriages solemnized; the barmitzvahs, and the many social reunions all appear as but yesterday. Our scene changes. The once familiar faces appear before us like a shadow or a dream. We...

WHAT OUR BOYS MUST LEARN. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 September 1897

WHAT OUE BOYS MUST LEARN. To cultivate a cheerful temper. To choose their friends among good boys. To learn to sew on their own buttons. Not to tease boys and girls smaller than themselves. To take a pride of being a little gentleman at home. To be polite and helpful to their own sisters as they are to other boys sisters. To treat their mother as politely as if she were a strange lady, who did not spend her life in their service. To feel a noble pride in making their mother and sisters their best friends. When their play is over for the day, to wash, their faces and hands, brush their hair, and spend the evening in the house. If thty do anything wrong, to take their mothers into their confidence, and above all, never to lie about anything they have done. Not to take the easiest chair in the room, and put it directly in front of the fire, and to forget to offer it to their mother when she comes in to sit dovvu. Not to grumble, or refuse, when asked, to do some errand which must be do...

THE NEW YEAR AS OF OLD. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 September 1897

THE NEW YEAH AS OF OLD. Each pillar of the Temple rang, The trumpets sounded loud and keen, And every minstrel blithly sang, With harps and cymbals oft between; And while those minstrels sang and played The mystic cloud of glory fell: — That shadowy light — that splendid shade In which Jehovah loves to dwell. It siowly fell, and hovered o'er The outspread forms of cherubim ; The priests could bear the sight no more — Their eyes with splendor dim. The king cast off his crown of pride And bent him to the ground; And priest and warrior, side by side, Knelt humbly all around. Deep awe fell down on every soul, Since God was present there, And not the slightest breathing stole Upon the stilly air 'Till he, the prince, with earth-bent eyes, And head uncrowned and bare, And hands stretched torth in reverend guise,. To heaven preferr'd his prayer. ... That prayer arose from off the ground Upon the perfumed breath, Which streaming censers pour'd around In many a volumed wreath. That prayer wa...

LADIES' SEATS IN THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 1 October 1897

| i a n |i|i I'll iiiini | LADIES' SEATS IN THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE. j A correspondent writes enclosing a plan of | the seating capacity of the ladies gallery of the \ Great Synagogue, and aptly demonstrates the I apparent want of business-like financial ^ arrangement in this respect. For instance, the ? half circle of front seats facing the Ark, and 'I situate immediately in front of and in close proximity to the choir, are let at three guineas. | These are the premier seats of the Synagogue, I and 'command a view of the whole building. | The reading desk is in full view, the Ark, ! the carrying of the Torah, and many other '* ritualistic practices can be closely watched. J The seats immediately behind we shall style J the second row, paid for at the rate of two 1 guineas, and the third row at one guinea are | all of full value. But take the end of the ] Synagogue next to the Ark. The front se&ts 4 are here let at three guineas, the next row at I two guineas, and the third and ...
