BOOM IN ZOOS animals LIKE THEIR CaGKS. "No Virus anil no mammals, from whatsoever part of the word or cli mate they may have come, ever ap proach the duration of life which they may bo expected to attain. If they arc kept in the Interior of a warmed house," paid Dr Chalmers Mitchell secretary to the Zoological Society of London, referring to the new open-air installations at the Zoo in a caper read before the Royal Society of Arts last night (snys the "Daily Express" of November 27). The customary heating arrange ments are expensive but certain modes of killing them. Fresh air is the fun damental necessity. "There is what may be called a boom in zoological gardens." he said. In this matter there is a real coincidence between what the public want and what is best for the advance ment of scientific knowledge. "There are very few living animals that are known to sci...

PUBLISHED EVEET WEDNESDAY. "For the cause that neods assistance^ For the wrong that needs reBistanco.' WEDNESDAY, FEB. 18, 1914 GRADING SEED WHEAT. It is almost unnecessary in tliis dis trict to point out the advantages derived from sowing good seed, whether it bo wheat, oats or any other crop, bat the vital importance of grading Feed wheat is to a great exteut overlooked. ]f more atten tion were given by farmers generally to this factor, and the grading of socd more extensively practised by them, or, perhaps, carried out at a co-operative grading plant centrally situated, the present yields would be substantially increased. The extra cost of giadedpuio seed is a very small item, and sinks into oblivion when compared with the results obtained from its use. To illustrate this it would be advisable for farmers in the coming season to sow Federa tion, which being so much ^grown should be used as a basis of experi ment, anil tho first and the second grades of tho samo variety. Theso are...
