How Honest Men Become Criminals. During the course of several years, the present writer has had considerable opportuni- ties of gathering details relating to criminal life. One result of his experience is that he has become firmly convinced that most of the inmates of our convict establishments and county jails, have been drafted into the ranks of the criminal classes not so much from natural inclination to steal or rob as from some sudden yielding to temptation in a moment of necessity. Nothing more is certain than that there are men at Portland or in Dartmoor who have none of that natural depravity of character found in confirmed thieves, and who would not now be condemned to the companionship of ruffians save for that fatal tendency inherent in most men to give way to temptation in a sudden hour of need. Wild Margaret. CHAPTER XII. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 12 December 1888

Wild Margaret. CHAPTER XII. And Margaret ? For a moment sha wan conscious of a feeling of repulsion, of dread, and almost of » dislike, but she fought it down, and instead of responding to his 1 especi al and almost reverential inclina tion with a formal bov^ she held out her hand. ♦ This is very good, very gracious of you, Miss Hale. To accept the nrMiaintance of a stranger so sud de ity ? ' ' No friend of Lord BJajr's must be a stranger to me,' she said with a Blair took her hand and kissed it, and he looked at Austin Ambrose triumphantly. Of the -capacity of this .colony to .produce fruits of a line quality and in &i&- .cieut quantity there cannot be the least ?doubt. The only difficulty has been how to got the fruit across and to place it -ai the market in good condition. Practically this lias lieen solved by shipments of oranges ,aud other .fruits tliat lmve been sent Home. The trinl siiipment in August last was particular ly instructive.
