NOTES AND NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke Standard — 16 August 1861

NOTES AND NEWS. Last Tuesday, at the IIawthorn Court of Petty Sessions, only one magistrate-Mr. P. O'B3rien-attended, and in consequence seve ral cases were postponed till the next sitting. Though there are several gentlemen in Hlaw thorn and its neighbourhood who have been appointed to the Commission of the Peace, yet we seldom find that more than two or three attend to the duties of their ollico. The police court bu'siness is usually left to Mr. O'Brien, Dr. Tierney, and the -Ion. T. lT. Power; and we consider it hardly ftir on the part of. their brother magistrates to accept the honour without performing the duties of their ollice. A meeting of the Hawthorn Council was held last night, to make arrangements for laying the foundation stone of the new Municipal buildings. In the absence of M1S. O'Grady, Esq., 31. L. A., Councillor Campbell was voted to the chair. On the motion of Councillor M'Doungall, seconded by Council lor Conran, it wnas resolved that thie founda tion stone of t...

DREADFUL CONFLAGRATION IN LONDON. DEATH OF MR. BRAIDWOOD. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke Standard — 16 August 1861

--0--- C 'DREADFUL CONFLAGRATION IN LONDON, t DEATH[ CF MRi. JIIRAIDWOOD. ( From 'The Tinu'e, Jine 24) The metropolis on Saturday evening was visited by one of the most terrific confla grations that has probablv occurred since the great fire of London.- Certainly for the a mount of property destroyed, nothing like it has been experienced during the last half= century. The scene of the catastrophe was on the water-side portion of Tooley-street, nearest t London Bridge-- a locality which has been singularly unfortunate during the last twenty fire vears, some of the largest fires having occurred there. The outbreak took place t in the extensive range of premises known as Cotton's Wharf ant? the bonded warehouse belcnging to Messrs. Scovell. They had an extensive river frontage, and the whole space on the land side extending to Tooley-street was covered with eight or nine warehouses six stories in height, some of which had for. merly been used as Ordnance stores, and the t whole occupyi...

To the Editor of the Standard. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke Standard — 16 August 1861

lb the Edituor of the Stanidrad. 3MR. ETITOR,-Now that the elections are over, we may take breathing time to consider our fiuture movements. All we have to do for the present is to watch the plantings we we havo set; we shall soon see the buddings, leaves, and fruits of our lkbours. Our busi ness is to make every effort by our own pro per culture of our principles to support our representatives in their upholding of them. At present the interests of our immediate lo cality claim our attention. In your journal of the 2nd inst. I read tvo letters which gave me much pleasure, as not only being indicative of the power, but of the will to make the effort to do good. The first of these letters, by one who introduces hinsolf as a " Constant Reader," from the excellent spirit in which it is written, needs no comment of mine. The second, signed " J. S.," in which attoution is called to the existence of a friendly association, established for the purpose of guarding against the casualties of ...
