OUR NEW STORY. The Mystery of "Bird's Reef." CHAPTER I. THE DWELLERS OF THE FLAT. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 2 April 1898

1OUR0 NEW STORY. i - 0-- i The M ystery of " Bird's Reef." (By J. ,M. Bacrr.) S CHAPTER I. THE DWELLERS OF THE FLAT. HINGS were very quiet on Ten Mile Flat. There were no new gullies opening up. nor any rich patches to cause fresh. rushes. The bulk of the young men had taken their swags and departed to distant fields, and few were left save these who could not get away, such as married men with families, who had no money to leave behind with their wives. and none to take with them tor a fresh start. In fact, most of them were more or less, deeply indebted at the general store, arid were living a sort of hand to mouth existence, fossicking in the rorl:ed-out ground on the flat or searching the tributary gullies for small blocks of ground which might' have been left as pillars to support some dangerous dip, or walls between claims too hurriedly wo:ked-out to secure what was termed the skimmings. :A few windlasses vete tbo b seen over old shaf.s here and there, and a few tuls,. and cra...

News of thbe Week. Fia--Ablout 8 a o'clock on Wied nesday 'evening: last, the usual calm serenity: of ?ir: tcvriow.hip;was rudely awakened fromt its let har.y by the ring ing of the fire bell, Tl.e scene of the fire was an .unocnrpihid house in Nichol son-:street, adj icent to the bridge, re cently. owned .by Mr, Wititerbottom, but now the. property of the Colonial Bank. By, the time the brigade had arrived, the flames had secured a good hold of the building, hbut a strong pressure of water from a single length of hose 'very s6on subdued the fire, and with the exception of the roof, the premises were kept intact. FUNNI[?]SITIES. THE ANGELIC HUSBAND. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 12 April 1898

...THE ANGELIC HUSBAND. There are husbands who are pretty, There are husbands who are witty, There are husbands who in public are as smiling as the morn; There are husbands who are healthy, There are famous ones and wealthy, qut the real angelic husband-well, he's never yet been born. Some for strength of love are noted, Who are really so devoted, That whene'er their wives are absent they are lonesome and forlorn ; And while now and then you'll find one Who's a fairly good and kind one, Yet the real angelic husband-oh! he's never yet been born. So the woman who is mated To a man who may be rated As "pretty fair," should cherish him forever and a day, For the real angelic creature, Perfect, quite, in every feature He has never been discovered, and he won't be so they say.
