THE WEST-NORTH-WEST. No.2. [BY A LATE RESIDENT.] THE CLONCURRY. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 15 January 1878

j THE WEST-NORTH-WEST. No! 2. íay A llTti HBBlOESt.], THE CLANCUIIKV. THAT wonderful country, that fouutain of copper, that mass of minerals, the Cloncurry inouutaiiis, wants a more competent man than myself to speak of it. When writing of Norman- ton, I called it the oi ly town in thc ilistrict, hut I must apologise, for I at the moment for- got the Cloncurry. There are herc two or three hotels, a store, &c, and all the clements of a thriving diggin ;s township, but ft is, I am told, languishing and wants fresh capital and new blood. As soon as labour and stores are cheaper, cartage more regular, and steam communication est! blisbed, then the truly great resources of this district will bo developed. Thc town which will take this trafile will be the o ie on the Leichhardt, for thc distance is slier er tlian to Normanton, and the road just as gin 1, as there are no rivers to cross, from the iloticurry there extendí a largo range of nu untains westerly till the Gregory is cros...

The Morning Bulletin, ROCKHAMPTON. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 15 January 1878

ROCKHAMPTON. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1S78. IN our remarks a few days since upon the Revenue Returns, as conveyed by telegraphic abstract, we expressed doubt as to the genuineness of the alleged in- crease of revenue.! The details are now to hand, and gol to show that our scepticism was warranted, and that when deductions are madp for amounts which are not real revente increases, the sum total will be considerably reduced. The most satisfactory increase is that in Customs Revenu*; yet even this has been stimulated by ttvo causes which do not indicate prosperiy. The increase of Loan expenditure wis ,£131,000, equal to about thirteen ihillings and four- pence per head of líe population ; while the increase in Cus oms Revenue was only ,£41,000 or at ' ie rate of less than five shillings per heai of the population. Thc natural effect of spending borrowed money is to find em )loyment for addi- tional hands, which in turn tends to augmentation of ( lustoms Revenue. Again, we find the &amp...
