FIRE PREVENTION AND CONTROL. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 21 January 1927

FIRE PREVENTION AND CONTROL. Prom R. J. ROSE,* secretary Nor thern Fire Fighting Association.—In last week's "Courier" I am credited with having said at the meeting held at Mount Barker, in my comments upon the power of councils to appoint Are controllers, that these powers were recognized In Laura in 1913. This is not what I intended to convey to the meeting, as it is not In accor dance with facts. It was in 1916 that the District Council.of Port Ger mein, on the suggestion of a meeting held at Wlrrabra, appointed ten Are controllers for the area under its con trol. It was not until a few years later, as the outcome 61 a meeting, convened by the Wlrrabra Fire Fight ing Committee, to which local govern ment bodies In- the adjoining districts were Invited to send delegates, that the Town Council of Laura and the District Council of Booyoolle, whose boundaries adjoin those of the Dis trict Council of Port Genneln, took steps to appoint Are conriollers.~Whlle a resident of Laura and in...

SUCCESSFUL SPARK NULLIFIER. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 21 January 1927

SUCCESSFUL SPARK . NULLIFIER. Since the disastrous bush fires which swept the heavily timbered areas in the vicinity of Powelltown in February, 1926, the Forests Com mission of Victoria, in common with sawmlllers and others, has given con siderable thought to the question of bush fire prevention (The Melbounre Argus says). Just how many bush fires, with their attendant loss of life and destruction of valuable timber, have originated as a result of a sparl: emitted from a train or from one of the tram engines puffing its way through the heart of the bush cannot be estimated, but it is certain that some have had their geneBis in that way;' It would seem, therefore, that either the spark problem must be I solved or traction entirely must be confined to other forms of power.. Miliars consider the steam engine the ; most practical for the purposes of ' their industry, but in the Yarra Junc tion district, although many spark arresting devices have been given a trial, they have not been Ba...

AN AGRICULTURAL PUZZLE. Production and Marketing. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 21 January 1927

AN AGRICULTURAL PUZZLE. Production and Marketing. One of the puzzles of present day students of agricultural progress Is the wide difference between the ability and foresight displayed by some farm ers In raising first-class crops, and their extraordinary short-sightedness in disposing of them, write Mr. Stir ling Taylor. A farmer he says, will often show keen intelligence and high efficiency in crop-production and then allow the best results of his care and diligence to be lost to him by unskilful market ing. In a general way the man who prefers to sell Individually knows that the private buyer Is out to make the best deal possible. He knows also. If he Is a wheat farmer, that sudden rises in price are a feature of the wheat market and that sudden desire on the part of the buyer to acquire his crop at a point or two above the quotations he last saw constitute a warning. But still the offers of a penny or two a bushel more than his neighbour received will often tempt him to sell. La...

"MY OWN PAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 21 January 1927

'MY OWN PAL." When (5 erald Beaumont wrote "The Gallant Guardsman" he must, have had Tr.m Mix in mind. For_there have been few stories better suited to the famous Western star than this simple hut thril ling tale of ft cowhand who adopts n little waif and becomes a mounted policeman to support her. It has br.-n adapted for Fox Films under the title, "My Own Pal." and will he screened at the Murray Bridge Lyric Theatre on' Wednesday next. Tom O'Hara, the hero of the Story is s genial,, easy going chap whose heait is the biggest thing about him. As far as he is concerned, fear Is but a word in the dictionary, and danger a tiling to be courted for the thrills sur rounding it. I to is eternally searching for adventure, and he lias but two loves 111 his life—Tony, Ids horse, and Jill, ids pal—until he meets Alice Leering the lovely rdeCe of 1 lie chief of police. As far as llirfils are concerned, ."My Own ' Pal" is no exception to the usual Mix , production.

THE MANNUM REGATTA. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 21 January 1927

THE MANNUM REGATTA. The annual regatta of the Mannum I Rowing Club will be held on Monday, ' January 31. The anuual function of the local club is one of the most im portant regattas of the year. For some years now it has increased in importance and public favor, and each ' year sees the attendance of previous years beaten and new records made. [ Many reasons combine to make Man num's regatta successful. There is first of all the splendid course. No need for the races to be rowed in heats. At a regatta held three or j four yearB ago ten crews started in the Arnold Cup and there was no crowding. Another reason is that the crews are in sight from start to I finish. Then the public, who patron | ise the regatta in large numbers, are j accommodated on Mannum's charming Recreation Ground, and are able to move about freely and also get a full view of the race. Then again, the Mannum Club has set a standard in hospitality to visiting crews which will take a lot of beating, and assists mater...

"WAYFARER" SEES LOWER MURRAY. (II.) [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 21 January 1927

'WAYFARER" . SEES LOWER j MURRAY. (II.) Two days at Manndm passed all too quickly and then I followed the long winding road up stream. Sheep farmers of the river uplands have in deed a dry country to contend with at this time of the year, and many of them cast longing eyes at the well grassed Murray flats, swamp country, and fertile islands. Many rely upon the brackish water of the bores, otlt ire are now carting water from the river, i he gravity water supply from Loxton overland to Mantung, in the heart of the great bend, or river mallee penin sula, will equip a splendid extent of the country. When levels are takm for settlers lower down to Porster, this scheme will be repeated on a smaller scale, and several dry areas developed. The overland route to Walker's Plat is sparsely settled, and is arid and stony, and disappointing when considered as river lands. But the roads are wonderful. Upkeep is not costly. The blinding useyi, ji broken chalky limestone, sets until the surface bec...
