NUMBER OF PIGS IN FIRST LITTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 13 December 1910

NUMBER OF PIGS IN FIRST LITTER. '- . It,. is always a mistake to over ' burden animals in rearing their first offspring, and this is more apt to occur with the sow than any other beast, as she is more prolific than the majority, and often produces numbers that she cannot rear to ad vantage. This not only dwarfs the ' progeny, but is very apt to hinder the fullest development of the sow, which is most disappointing, and a backward step which all should ? avoid. Most of us have had sows that produced about a dozen p'gs the first time of farrowing. TJiis ' was- mostly looked on with approval as indicating a prolific sow, and ''.-that is right; but that is no reason Why she should be oppressed and stunted in her progress by the crav . ings of- too large a family. There ? is nothing more worrying. I have , often seen a young sow with a .broad, well-conditioned back prev ious .to farrowing, but long belore the pigs were weaned she was re duced to skin and bone only, and pitiable to see. N...

The Farmer. TO INCREASE MILK [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 13 December 1910

The Farmer. TO INCREASE MILK Professor Kronacher has studied j the power of 'yohimbin' to in crease the flow of milk of cows and sheep: The results prove that the., yield of milk is increased during the administration of 'yohimbin'' commercially profitable in the case of healthy animals. In the case of a cow, 'whose yield of milk Svat. M\ , minished by an inflamation, the di- j sease was greatly mitigated by the treatment, and an increasing yield of milk followed. Many similar instances' were observed. In no case did any injurious results follow the administration of the medicine. No experiments have yet been made on the influence of 'yohimbin' as a galactogogue in the human species. In this case, the question of expense is of less relative importance, and the favorable results obtained with animals appear to promise a suc cessful outcome.

COLOURED PRINTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 13 December 1910

COLOURED PRINTS. Prints in which the prevailing tone of a scene — the dominant col our note — is faithfully rendered may be produced with ease by staining them to the appropriate tint. An improved means of accomplishing this has recently- been- introduced in a new series of Special 'Soloid' Photographic Stains. They pos sess the property of having a great er affinity for gelatine than for paper and secure an even distribu tion of colour over the print. Whe ther it is the ruddy glow of a sun set scene which is required, a fire light interior, a moonlight glen, or the golden light of midsummer day, the prints can be dipped in the ap propriate solution of one of the 'Soloid' Photographic Stains, which can now be had in -red, yel low, blue, green and salmon. They are issued in tubes of six.

TO CONVERT DECIMAL TO ENGLISH MEASURES. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 13 December 1910

TO CONVERT DECIMAL TO ENGLISH MEASURES. For all practical purposes this is quite a simple matter by adopting the following rules — Reckon each 50 grammes or 50c. c. as 1 ounce for large numbers, but write a small number of grammes as ten times as many grains. Thus — Water 100 c.c-, potass bromide 5 grammes be comes water 2 ounces, potass bro mide 50 grains. Again, water 500 c.c, soda sulphite 50 grammes be comes water 10 ounces, soda sul phite 1 ounce. Once again, water 1,000 c.c, soda sulphite 150 grammes, amidol 3.5 grammes be comes water 20 ounces, soda sul phite 3 ounces, amidol 35 grains. It is useful to remember that follow ing — approximate — equivalent quantities — 1000 c.c. equals 35-1/5 ounces; 100 c.c. equals 3-1/2 ounces 1 c.c. equals 17 minims; 1 gramme equfils 15-1/2 grains: 1 ounce (av oirdupois) equals .28-1/2 c.c or grammes.

FISHES WHICH HOIST SAILS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 13 December 1910

FISHES WHICH HOIST SAILS. Various marine animals possess organs which, raised above the sur face, act as sails, by means of which they are propelled along the water. Among these may be mentioned the Portuguese man-of-war, and the paper nautilus. Certain fishes, it appears, use the same method of pro gression, the dorsal-fin acting as a sail. Brousonnet called such fishes 'poissons voilers.' And the scien tific name histiophorous (sail-bearer), given to a genus of fiBh, implies a similar belief. In a contribution to the Zoological 'Jahrbuch,' Louis Dollo claiams that other genera are also sail-bearers. He suggests also that among the cetaceans the gram pus and.bottlenoscd whale may make a similar use of the dorsal fin.

IMITATING DAYLIGHT. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 13 December 1910

IMITATING DAYLIGHT. The Bureau of Standards at Wash ington has been experimenting on the best sources of light to combine with the mercury vapour arc in or der to produce an imitation of ave rage daylight. It has been found that the colour of the light given by the Welsbach mantle, and car bon, tungsten, and tantalum fila ment glow-lamps is in each case close ly complementary to that of the mercury vapour arc. SVhen light from either of these sources is com bined with (.bat of the mercury arc' in proper proportion a satisfactory imitation of daylight is produced. The best proportions have been found to be one candle-power of mercury light to 0-57 candle-power of Wels bach light, 0.54 of tungsten lamp light, and 0.50 of carbon glow light.

A CURIOUS EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 13 December 1910

A CURIOUS EFFECT OF TEM PERATURE. A remarkable transformation of a cat's fur by temperature has been reported by Professor A. Geddes, of the Dublin Royal College of Sur geons. A black cat was accidentally shut up .in the refrigerating cham ber of a mail steamer and was not discovered until about thirty-two days later. The cat was hardly re cognisable, the fur having become long and thick, changing nearly to white on the back. Brought out into the intense heat of the Red Sea, the heavy white coat rapsitly fell out, and the black cat was itself again be fore London was reached
