Use the Cultivator . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

Use the Cultivator . The nso of tho cultivator not only loosens thc soil , thus admitting tho free circulation of air and penetration of moisture , bnt keeps the grass and weeds from securing a foothold . Every blade of grass is compelled to draw on the soil for plant food , and when occupying the ground intended for crops It becomes a mutter of competition for occupancy of the soil between thc crop and the grass . Woods are especially severe on land , as the majority of them are exceedingly rich in nitrogenous material , thereby appropriating that element at the expense of the crop . If the cultivator is used freely , beginning at the period when tlie plants iirst make their appearance , the ground will always bo in a tine condition , and the vexations incidental to the baking of the soil thereby avoided .

The Silk Industry . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

The Silk Industry . May is thc time to begin . The leave ., of the osage orange are said to be equal to the mulberry , and there is no reason why the management of silk worms may not be a part of the occupation of many who are not capable of performing more laborious work . The silk industry may not be very remunerative when conducted exclusively ( though it certainly produces a return if it gives employment to those desiring it ) , but tlie judicious management consists in dispensing with fences and substituting hedges , setting out fruit trees on the ground and keeping poultry to assist in destroying insects , to say nothing of an apiary , which entails little or no labor in the way of feeding or attention . Tlie true method of conducting such enterprises , then , is to endeavor to combine several together , as but little more attention is required to manage a number than only one . _

Planting Corn . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

Planting Corn . Because a particular piece of land lias produced corn successively for a number of years does not imply that the land is too rich , or that it can endure sucli taxation indefinitely . Nor should tho methods usually In practice lie maintained if better systems can be presented . Tho ques-, tion of deep or shallow plowing for corn is still unsettled , but that com docs best under thorough cultivation cannot be denied . Good and clean cultivation for corn not only promotes tlie growth . inc-eases the yield . and hastens maturity , but the labor of so doing is compensated for by the good condition in which corn laud is left to lie followed by a succeeding crop of wheat , rye in- oats . Weeds and grass in tlie cornfield are very unsightly , and if tlie crop is neglected for a week after the intruders appear tlie work of eradication is increased fourfold . The proper way , therefore , to work a cornfield , is not to allow weeds to go to * seed , and it is safe to say , not...

What is Potato Hot ? [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

What is Potato Hot ? Nearly all the diseases of vegetables may lie prevented if a complete knowledge of their nature and character could lie impressed on those who make specialties of certain crops , and in this relation it may be stated that the potato rot is caused by a microscopic fungus { Icronosliora infestansi v .-Uiuh infests the potato plant . By fungus is understood , says the Scientific American , a plant of a very low order , tlie more familiar members of which are the toadstools , mushrooms , mildews and moulds . Some of tlie fungi live only on decaying organic matter , and are comparatively harmless ; in fact , are often helpful in hastening decay and preparing substances for future usefulness . Other species of fungi are parasitic , growing upon living tilings . The bread mould is a familiar illustration of u small fungus which feeds upon dead matter , while the potato rot fungus is an equally striking example of one thriving upon a living plant , The mildow of tlie gr...

Rye for Permanent Pasture . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

Rye for Permanent Pasture . Eye is the earliest grass crop that can lie grown . If seeded down in tho fall it not only gets a good start if the season is favorable , thereby affording a slight opportunity for grazing in the fall to those who are not favored with pastures , but it comes out luxuriantly in early spring and affords green material when other grasses aro dormant . It grows on tlie sandy soils as well as on those that are heavy , but thrives best on a fertile light loam . It may not be known that if rye lie prevented from seeding that it may thus lie converted into a permanent pasture , bnt such is the fact . If cattle or sheep are turned upon It , and kept in the rye field until the crop is grazed down , the effort o £ the ryo to reach the seed-licaring period will provide an abundance ot grass as long as it can lie so controlled . When turned over to sheep they cut it down very close , which is not desirable , but this obstacle may lie overcome by confining the sheep to...

Birds in the Orchard . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

Birds in the Orchard . The insects and tlie murdering gunners arc tlie worst enemies the fruit grower encounters . There was a time , in the past , when the earth was under thc dominion of insects and venomous reptiles , and not until the birds completed the work of insect destruction was our giobo made habitable for man . Although the conditions ot the present day may not be so unfavorable to mans prosperity , yet he could not exist without the aid of tho birds . The birds keep the intruders from multiplying too rapidly , and would even do much greater service , bnt for the base ingratitude of man , who , with the shot-gun and snare , keeps them perpetually limited to fewer numbers and drives them tr « m his presence . How can birds be induced to remain near the farmer . Simply by protecting them . We well know that birds themselves prey upon each other , the carnivorous hawk and owl making sad havoc among tlie insectivorous kinds , the one depending upon strength and natural weapo...

Shall we Plant Pears ? [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 May 1884

Shall we Plant Pears ? u . r . . T . To this question I answer yes , certainly ; but with certain limitations as to soil and situation . To lie sure there is danger to be apprehended from bacteria , aud the resultant pear blight , but much less than most people think ; for familiarity with these creatures , intinitesinially little , is breeding a wholesome measure of contempt .. For middle latitudes , there is no fruit tree hardier , longer lived , or more productive than tlie pear , and as for merit as a fruit it is second only in excellence to the peach , with the advantage of being a longer keeper , improving with age . lint to succeed with the pear , certain essentials must be attended to , which restrict and limit its areas of cultivation to gardens and grounds . This grows out of its relatively small root development as compared with the apple , and demands for it a soil which is not only rich in the mineral elements of plant food , but a situation where , while the soil is ne...
