good deal . I shall never’ forget that one , because that boy made me so mad I felt like asking him to drop the course . Hold it ! Wait a _m inute—I know what you were going to ask me . No , I did not give him a ‘ five ’ either ! It was like this : as I said before , I used the black-boa rd a good deal that day . Well , one of the boys conceived the idea to use _mile as the target for his pieces of chalk every time I turned _miry bac k . Ho was n ’t a good shot , ‘ but j _imst the same 1 did not like the sound of the chalk whizzing by me . He kept up his tar get practice for sever’al minutes , but one time , and to my great satisfaction , I caught him with his armn raise ( i , —he was about to shoot his next piece . I believe that it had never- occurred to _ihmn that he could be caught , for he turned as red _mis a boiled lobster and then as pale a ’ s a gobbler that has just seen an ax . K AMPUS KORNE R JOTS Seeing that the exams are all over ’ , the ultra-collegiate are again wending their way to familiar haunts—afternoons and evenings the thumps , thuds and trumps come roaring down , It ’ s just sad to be under Jug , Doe and company . Methinks sometimes that they are going to fall thru , just like ‘ Senator Nilfeh ’ s political speeches , Only I get scared ‘ cause they _nright injure me and themselves . They need diversions , so I h ope Jug never falls , ‘ because he will get a _shock , —a sensation , if you know w’hat I mean . A thought just flashed up suddenly like lightning does sometimes . As I’ was saying , Theodore _Beleher , not so long ‘ ago , nominated him self for the Hall of Fame . Less than two hundred years ago man thought that there existed a very sharp line of demarcation ‘ between the living and lifeless things , ‘ but from a modern point of view man is completely ‘ baffled ‘ by a line drawn so acute . As late as a century ago , chemists still had faith in classif ying chemical compounds that were of m inera l origin as inorganic and those of animal or vegetable origin as organic . Men , at this time , thought that it was solely impossible to produce any compounds of organic nature synthetically in laboratories . They thou ght that the action of the vital princi ple was very essential , but the young German chemist Wohler , gave the idea its first blow in 1828 , when he prepared _rirea . This was the first syntheti’c organic compound which he called anomalous cyanate of ammonia , and it was thought before to be of inorganic nature , In Frankfort , Woh ler worked out experiments with his friend , Dr . J . Buch . Seven years later he moved to Heidelburg , w...

We call cyan a radical because it is an unchang ing constituent in a series of bc dies or’ compounds . 2 . Because it can be substituted in these ‘ by other _simnple bodies , 3 . Because , in it , _s _comup ounds with a simple body , this last can be separated anti substituted by another simple body . At least two of these conditions must he fulfilled for a group of atonr s to be re ~ garded as a radical . This radical theory u rmquestionably aroused great interest anti stimulated chemists to niuch fruitful and even more brilliant work . Thus , one m ay mention the research of Bu _, nsen upon the _idako dyl compounds , which _formued one of the strongest supports of the theory . The theory ‘ of ~ aturat _i...
