: ""'' : ' " INQUIRY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1875

: : INQUIRY . -. ¦ l _ . . • ! BY 0 . K . K . He that questioheth much shall learn much . —Bacon . And most we question what we , most desire . —Prior . Modern philosophy , has come to such a point that to think is to doubt . Or , we may say that the thinker must pass through the clarkhess of doubt before he enters the , bright realm of truth and certainty , and becomes satisfied iwithhis . position . Inquiry reigns everywhere . Doubt and inquiry must necessarily attend each bth & r , related as they are ; for what being of any intelligence doubts biit does hot inquire . That he only who doubts , or , at best , is not fully satisfied with the present known facts or accepted tKeories , does inquire , is natural and self-evident . | Indeed it has been said that doubt is the penalty of thought . That is to say , that thdse who are pains-taking or have any inclination toward independent thinking , have their seasons and subjects ofdbubt . It is a penalty which they struggle ...

ON THE PROPER TREATMENT OF FUEL . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1875

ON THE PROPER TREATMENT OF FUEL . BY H . A . w . In communities , which nature has abundantly supplied with her subterranean stores of fuel , it is to the majority of the people of lidio or no consequence , on account of the cheapness of the article , if a few bushels or tons of coal are annually lost by an improper-treatment . In all communities however there are some persons , to whom the saving of even a few dollars a year is a matter of no little importance , and hence a few words in regard to the proper treatment of fuel would nowhere be amiss . But not all communities , no not even all countries can boast of a bountiful supply of this indispensable material , and to them of course this question becomes one of general importance . The amount of fuel ,, which individual families use for domestic purposes is insignificant compared with that consumed by the leading industries of a community , and in the former case the material , which could be saved by proper treatment is many ti...

THOUGHTS AND THEIR RELATION TO MAN . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1875

THOUGHTS AND THEIR RELATION TO MAN . BY A .- L . D . Every thought originated , every idea produced , and- every plan executed is the result of thmking . Mind is the mint in which thoughts are coined . And as the value of coins depends upon the class and quantita of the ingredients entering into their composition , so we declare thoughts and ideas to be foolish or wise , false or true , according to the sentiments they express and the principles they contain , as judged of through the medium of our personal knowledge and serise of right and wrong . The human brain . discovers and never . creates thought . The . chsmist who * introduces new and- rare . substances does not create but discovers them-. Experimenting- with simpler elements and compounds with which he is perfectly acquainted , in whatever form and under whatever conditions they , may appear , . he so places them in contact that all their originality is dissolved into new substances subject to new laws of combination and h...

MEN OF HISTORY-MARAT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1875

MEN OF HISTORY-MARAT . BY c . o . s . Our key to the character of Marat is found in his regret in life for the want of time to immolate three hundred thousand heads to appease the nation and further the cause ofthe revolution , this being the result of his most rigid computation ; and his almost magnificent cruelty is seen in his proposal to hang the right hundred deputies ofthe Convcn--lion on eight hundred trees in the Garden ofthe Tuilleries with Miraboau on the first of them . Lcam , said he to Robespierre , that my credit with the people does not depend upon my ideas , but upon my audacity , the daring impetuosity of my mind , my cries of rage , despair and fury against the wretches who impede the action of the Revolution . These cries are the most simple and sincere expressions of the passions which devour my mind . It is hardly strange the view this man cook of life , the world and its inhabitants . He had no country . At an early age he tore himself from his native Switzerla...

EXCHANGES AND COLLEGE NEWS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1875

EXCHANGES AND COLLEGE NEWS . Christmas in the Central CeUcgean is rather flabby — we would advise Alp honzo . U > go soak his head . ALUMNI JOURNAL AND THE CONTEST . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1875

ALUMNI JOURNAL AND THE CONTEST . In the November number of THE ILLINI there appeared two articles , about the Inter-Collegiate Association and contest . It was not our intention at the time to allow anything in our columns , which was not entirely true and in good taste ; but it appears that the editors of the Alumni Journal take oftense at what was written and have determined to rise to a point of order as they express it . They have attacked us in * a most pointed manner . We propose to reply and we do not desire to limit our article to the stirring up of only the pure minds of our Wesleyan friends . They have stated facts (?) and we expect to set the matter right in this article ; if it be possible to d o so , by showing the falsity of certain of their statements and the truth of our charges . They say our criticisms have been aimed largely at their orator . While it is not our desire to inculcate the principle of questioning the decisions of the judges , yet since our light crit...
