1 HOUSEHOLD 1 SHOPPING IN NEW YORK DURING THE HOLIDAY RUSH . The first thing all our friends said when they found we were to spend a few days in New York in December was : How perfectly lovely ! You will have a chance to do your Christmas shopping in good stores ! We had rather intended to patronize our home merchants for the modest things we intended to give away , and to spend most of our time in New York in sightseeing , but when everybody told us of the magnificence of the stores and the wonderful bargains to be obtained , we thought we could not miss this great opportunity . There are bargains every day in every store , they told us , and it may be true , but we are a bit doubtful since our experience . There is nothing doing in a New York City store until about nine in the morning , and at five or five-thirty the doors are closed , though of course for the week or ten days preceding Christmas they remain open a little later .
