_WBBKbY HEWS . What is news ? Have you ever stopped to think ? Have you not at some time thrown down your paper in disgust , saying there is nothing in it ? But were not the usual number of columns devoted to reading matter , and was not the selection and composition of the matter up to the usual _standard , —why then nothing in it ? Another person will pick up this same paper and peruse its columns with eagerness , but why ? Let us see what really is and is not news and under what conditions news ceases to be news longer . Let us suppose a great fire to have occurred in one of our large cities late at night , all the dailies except one are able to publish an account of the event in the morning . Certainly this item is news . The ready and increased sale of the paper confirms it . But how about the paper not publishing an account ? HENRY ROUZER smiTH . _^^ Hakkv R . Smiih , a Junior in the Sem inary , died suddenly on the afternoon ol October 2 nd while returning to the Seminary from the Springs Hotel where he had been attending the Belmont Sunday School picnic . Physicians are of the opinion that his death was due to heart trouble . The truth that in the midst ot life we are in death never came home to us with such foice as when Harry was so sud ¬ denly taken from us . It was nigh impossible to realize that he was gone , called home , until in the class-room we saw the chair that used to be so full of life and energy now silent and empty . We wondered why some othei one of us , whom the Professois would not miss nearly so much , who have not the same power to attract and attach others to ourselves , whose future were not nearly so radiant with promise , was not taken instead . But he is gone to a more glorious service , and to that complete revelation to which the true Christian student looks forward with eag...

MAYOR LEVhRING of Baltimore , urges that the state of Maryland should extend financial aid to Johns Hopkins University , in the difficulties in which that institution finds itself owing to the nonpayment of dividends by the Baltimore and Ohio raihoad . The great benefit derived by the state of Maryland fiom the work of Johns Hopkins is urged as a reason for this assistance The appropriations made by Pennsylvania to Lehigli University , under similai conditions , and to the Univeisity of Pennsylvania are cited as arguments . While the very important and beneficial woik of the institutions named gives powerful reasons for appeals to individuals for assistance , every educational institution in the state is doing the same sort of work for the state and by reason of lack of funds finds itself greatly restricted in the work it desires performing , hence simple justice requires that if one institution receive state appropriations all should have similar treatment . Uniform taxation and un...
