THE SHEAF [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 5 February 1880

THE SHEAF THE mild Winter , with its soaking rains , filling the sloughs of the prairies and rendering the roads well-nigh impassable for weeks together , has again called public attention very strongly to the subject of drainage . The uleetingof the tile manufacturers in several of the States have also given new impetus to the consideration of this all-important matter to Western farmers . The FARMERS REVIEW will very soon devote considerable space to the dissemination of information upon tile drainage . Its managers are already in direct communication with a great many farmers who have been laying tile more or less for the past half dozen years . The HEVIEW proposes to make the subject of drainage an important feature this Spring . EVERY person interested in Orcharding , will read the interview with A . R . Whitney , Esq ., as published in this paper . In regard to varieties it will be remembered that Mr . Whitney only gives those , that he considers do best , and prove most profi...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 5 February 1880

AGRICULTURAL PREMIUM CROPS IN IOWA . In the last Iowa Agricultural Report , ( 1878 ) we find that the greater portion of the premiums on farm crops was taken by Mr . L . G . Clute , of Delaware county . We will here give the sworn statement of Mr . Clute as to the manner in which some of these crops were grown , and the cost of growing : POTATOES . Said crop of potatoes was grown on clay loam soil ; southern and eastern exposure ; said lot was used for sheep and hog pasture for several years , until the hazel brush was all killed when it was fallowplowed last Fall in last of August , and plowed again in March , well harrowed before planting ; was furrowed out with shovel plow three feet apart one way ; the tubers were cut to single eves for medium sized potatoes , and dropped about eighteen inches apart in the furrows and covered three inches deep with dirt and rotten sods . When the potatoes were j ust coming through the ground went over with adrag crosswise of the rows , killing a...

IN THE GAR 0 EN .-N 0 . 6 [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 5 February 1880

IN THE GAR 0 EN .-N 0 . 6 GRAPES . I like grapes , but somehow I never had any luck with em . I got a vine or two , most every time I ordered any apple trees , but they never amounted to any thing . If you have ever had occasion to say any thing about grapes to a farmer , ten chances to one you have heard him say something like the above . I have been among farmers a good deal , and my observations of their method—or , more properly , their lack of method , —of grape culture has convinced me that they expect more of a grape than any other one thing that grows in the garden . They get a vine and set it out in some neglected corner , giving it little or no manure . Then—they let it severely alone , and wonder why it doesnt bear . And they say they havent the knack to raise grapes . They cant fuss with em . Why , my dear sir , there s no knack about it , and you havent got to fuss with them . If youll only give them enough to eat , and take as much care of each vine as you do of a hill...

THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY ( 0 . ) H 0 RTI CULTURAL SOCIETY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 5 February 1880

THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY ( 0 . ) H 0 RTI CULTURAL SOCIETY . This society , with Us headquarters at Dayton , Ohio , has justly earned a national reputation . For age , enterprise and results , it certainly has no superior , and probably no equal , among the local societies of the country . For thirteen years il has held regular meetings without omission—all well attended and replete with interest . For fruits it can proudly point to neater farms , more attractive houses and grounds , excellent methods of tillage , superior orchards , vineyards aud gardens , and valuable annual reports , which are rich with information on the several points which interest farmers and horticulturists . The reasons for this unusual prosperity are obvious . First I must mention the leading inspiring spirit , N . Ohmcr , who has been continued as President from the first . Mr . Ohmer possesses rare intelligence , fine judgment , broad sympathies , a genial nature , and has few superiors as a successful pomol...

MONEY AND COMMENCE [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 5 February 1880

MONEY AND COMMENCE FINANCE . TUESDAY EVENING . Feb . 3 rd , 1 S 80 . There are few changes of interest in the situation of monetary affairs either here or at other leading financial centers ; the city banks say the falling off in tbe receipts of grain , in connection with the extreme quietude that has prevailed in the leading branches ot business during the past month has materially checked the demand for discounts , and caused funds to accumulate in the bank vaults to an unprofitable degree . But they anticipate an improved demand for loans when business revives , which it will do as soon as tbe country roads become passable , and grain , and other farm products begin to move forward freely . There is a large amount of money seeking loans on real estate , and rates are easy for good city property at 6 @ 7 per cent Advices from the East also report money plenty , and cheap to borrowers who have good names or securities to offer . i MERCHANDISE MARKET . The merchandise markets show a...
