The Value of a Sire . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1910
The Value of a Sire . In checking over the sows in our herd and rearranging the card index in the rear and keeping those now in the breeding herd to the front of the cabinet , I came across a sow whose record seems marvelous . Several years ago soon after we bought Masterpiece and our friends and neighbors felt we were crazy , we received a letter from Mr . Chas . Wilder of Loraine , Ohio , asking us that if he would send us a good sow gratis would we send him in exchange the choice boar pig from the litter by Masterpiece . We answered Yes . Mr , Wilder selected a young sow sired by Royal Premier , the boar that won such favorable comment through the press at the St . Louis Worlds Fair and that stood next to Masterpiece in the winnings . This sow was bred to Masterpiece and produced a litter of ( 6 ) pigs ( 2 ) boars and ( 4 ) sows . The best boar was shipped to Mr . Wilder and proved an excellent sire in his herd . Two of the sows were fitted for show and placed in our herd in 1907...

Converting the Natives . Fox , 111 The Berkshire World . Dear Sirs : —I am delighted to inform you that all of my stock is in excellent condition and I expect to have my early litters begin to cohie shortly . LEE MASTERPIECE 4 th s pigs are doing very nicely and give sreat promise . My fall pigs are in great condition and there will be very few which will not make excellent gilts . The two young boars by Maramech out of Pastmaster Duchess 2 d are developing nicely and the larger of the two will make an outstanding sire . He is the best bodied pig I ever saw and I have had several very good offers for him . The farmers in this neighborhood are just beginning to realize how good the BERKSHIRE is and several have already asked me to reserve boars for them out of my spring crop . This puts me in good spirits as the BERKSHIRE was very little known hereabouts before I butted in with my herd . I have been able to start some of my neighbors with PURE BREDS and I expect that eventually this ...

Mr . Breitbach Starts the Farmers [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 March 1910
Mr . Breitbach Starts the Farmers We are just in receipt of a letter from Mr . E . Breitbach , Onslow , Ia „ in which he states that his recent sales of Berkshires have been very good . He just shipped a fall pig to a party in Missouri and sent a young sow to Arkansas . He . also states that he sold ten young sows to a farmer in his neighborhood for $ 220 . 00 . Mr . Breitbach picked out the sows himself and delivered them . There was no expense for crates or express and the man who bought them stated that , these were the first Berkshires he ever saw and was greatly pleased with them , as they had so much greater length of body than other breeds . These sows were all bred to Baroness Masterpiece . This shows that the farmer is taking an interest in the Berkshire and we believe that our readers will do well to write Mr . Breitbach in regard to the stock he has for sale , mentioning The Berkshire World .
