1 63?* ir:?' IP & atK-f THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. C. WARNOCK, EDITOR. THE Fargo Argus argues that the Re publican pf that place is primarily responsible for the creation of the capital commission and the consequent location of the capital at Bismarck by defeating the regular ticket last fall, for had not that been done the commission would not have had an existence. However much this may be true the system of pri ority reasoning is not a very acceptable one as it nearly always proves too much. By pursuing this course of reasoning the ancestry of the ltepublicau might be traced back to Adam and Evo and they be primarily held responsible for making Bismarck the second capital of Dakota territory. Better leave the responsibility with the 15th legislative assembly, and let them shift the responsibility if they desire to do so. It may be they rather pride themselves on the work they did in this respect and would prefer that the credit be not given to some incident or cause antecedent to...

THE unterrified democracy of Obio held their stiu convention it this week and nominated a Headley for governor. This convention followed the plan of the republican con vention of a few weeks ago in so far as the obscurity of its candidate is con cerned. in both cases the convention teemed to act upon the hypothesis that the candidate himself was a matter of minor consideration, and in both cases the leaders were relegated to aback seat The success of Ohio in the natienal con vention of 1876 and 1880 in the dark horse business has made the scheme very popular in the politics of that state with both parties. 1 ®r %R^¥FR *•, •... ir 1 ty 1 THE FOURTH. The Day We Celebrate ud Hew We Celrbraled It. AT LAMOtJRE. The Alert had representatives at all the Fourth of July celebrations from Car rington on the north to LaMoure en the south, a distance of one hundred miles along the James river, and the first to which we will call attention is that of La Moure then following up the river to Camngton, which latter place, however, is some distance west of the river but is in the famous James river valley. As the sun descended below the west em horizon on the evening of the third a party assembled on a beautiful eminence in the north part of the beautiful new and enterprising town of La Moure, erected a pole and. few minutes later run up the broad stripes and bright stars ef the Americau flag which was cheered until the majestic bluffs of the James river for miles away took up the refrain and reverberated it as if the very ground joined a salute of honor to the proudest emblem among the nations of th...

1 "5 I THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. C. WARNOCK, Editor. Tkk motto of "Fear God and take your own part" adopted by the Huron convention will probably succeed as the motto of the atate now in processof incubation. In some respects, under the present circumstances, it may in that.locality hold over the scriptural injunction, "Fear God and keep His commandments," but North Dakota acts upon the latter from an inherent princi ple of natural inclination. We take our own part, and most anything else we can •?*get honestly, such as the delegate in con gress and the capital, but never lose sight of the moral injunction quoted above which cemprehends the decalogue and all that it implies. We fear our southern brethren were indiscreet in their selection of their motto, for if Bob In -gersoll should hear of the first proposi- it contains he would work against their scheme. But raottos like epitaphs are "5," chosen more for the sentiment they con tain than for propriety of application, and perhaps this...

4 & HMk 'i-f 1 ft fl ^fl "PF' I 5 ,Ua. 7 4 THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. 0. WAltNQCK, EDITOR. THIS Bismarck Tribune, in a ringing editorial last Saturday morning, brought the cold and lukewarm citizens of that city to their senses by advising the pledgors of the $80,000 balancc of the bonus to withdraw the proposition and let the capital go somewhere else unless the people who had received the benefit of their enterprise should come up that day like men and fulfill the moral obliga tion of helping their benefactors out with the burden. As a result the inouey was raised and in bank before night and the capital secured. The Tribune will be justly entitled to the honor and distinc tion of saving the capital to Bismarck, for the desperate remedy it administered showed that it had a desperate case in liand. It also showed that the Tribune has a keen and high sense of the moral obligation of man to inau, and was emi nently worthy of the pen of Col. Louns berry who is known and recognized th...

if THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. O. WARNOCK, EDITOR. THERE is considerable agitation in rail road circles now over tbe reported scheme of the Northern Pacific to build a road called the Chicago, Bt. Paul & Northern Pacific, makipg a direct line through to Chicago and arrangements with one of tbe trunk lines to run their trains through to New York city by which pas sengers will be taken through from New York to Portland, Oregon, without change of cars. The report is not con firmed but it has such an air of plausi bility that the officials of other railroad corporations that would be affectcd by it are considerably agitated and are busy explaining why the Northern Pacific will not do anything of the kind. It is Baid to bo President Henry Villard's pet scheme and ambition to make such a hoc of the NorthoMi Pacific and it is not improbable that if he sets himself about it to accomplish the enterprise it will be done.
