From $30,000,000 to $40,000,000 worth of old jewelry lies idle in Eng land, and various firms have begun to melt it down and make new patterns. The spires of St. Patrick's Cathed ral in New York were finished last Thursday. They are supposed to be 340 feet high, and cost $250,000. A blast of 6000 pounds of powder was recerjtly sent off in a quarry on Telegraph Hill, San Francisco. It shook the earth for miles around and dislodged fron 30,000 to 50,000 tons of rock. It is estimated that the Republican National Committee has saved $25, 000 in postage by franking campaign documents as "parts of the Congres" sional Globe." The new cruiser Baltimore, recently launched at Chester, Pa., has already met with a mishap.
