flje itemorclt Sribtuw. Bismarck, D. T., Dec. 27,1876. can but admire the course taken by Wade Hampton, the democratic can didate for governor in South Carolina, and regret tbat the South Carolina re turning board in. its wisdom saw fit to count him out. The quicker the stale governments of the south pass into tht hands of men of his character the better it will be for all interests. The reign of the carpet baggers in the south hah done more to destroy confidence in tbe republican party than have the numer ous crimes traced to individual members of that party. Tbe use that was made of the troops, too, in connection with the orginizatioa of the South Carolina Legislature was most unfortunate. This jfollowin* the unwarranted inter ference in Lousianatwo or three years ago, in more than the fair minded men of the country will attempt to justify. The unwarranted interference of the Supreme Court of South Carolina with the work and duties of the returning board is also to be condemned...

gfjc Pratftrdt Sritotne. Bismarck, D. T., Jan. 3, 1877. COMMISSIONER WILtIAMSOJi'8 REPORT. Gen. Williams oo, Commissioner of the General-Land Office, in his annual report for the year ending June 30. 1876, discusses nt considerable length the question of preserving the timber lands of the country. He says that a national calamity is being rapidly and surely brought Upon the country by the useless destruction of forests, and urges more legislation and a more stringent execution of the laws for their preserva tion. "The timber on the land, re inaining unsold," the commissioner says, "is as much the property of the government as the money in the Treas uiy, and (ar more important to its fu ture prosperity and welfare. If this is so, then why should it not be kept as other government property, or sold for its value as the demands of the country require it?" He urges that the law should provide for "absolute confisca tion of all timber cut upon the public lands, and a fine and imprison...

Jt 4* Bismarck, D. T., Jan. 10,1877. It is with pleasure that we. note the election of Ole J. Johnson,. of Dulutb, to the position of Sergeaint-at Arms of the Minnesota House of representatives. Ole was a route agent on the North Pa cific and v^as one of the most efficient of those employed, but an immense amount of stealing seemed to be indul ged by somebody in the Nbrthwestern mail service and as Ole had no partic ular congressional friend to look after his interest, and having been suspicion ed, though nothing wrong was or could be traced to him, he was removed. The stealing continued and was subsequent ly fixed upon two clerks, now in the penetentiary for their crimes, in the St Paul office, and thus Ole was relieve ed of the unjust suspicion which had rested upon him, but he has been for months out ot employment. We trust when the Minnesota Legislature no longer requires the services of Mr. John son that the Minnesota delegation in congress will see to it that he is res to...
