STATE journal ALEXANDRIA SATURDAY EVENING, JAN. 28, 1865. W. J. V OWING, Editor. The Situation The operations of the rebels are practically restricted to three Slates, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The largest army they can boast is hemmed in at Richmond, not able to budge a peg; while Sherman is on the move, and will, if he keeps on, alienate both of the Caro Unas from the rebel cause. The latest information we have iu reference to the movements of that energetic commander is that the remnant of the gang so hastily taken out of Savannah by Hardee, were flying to avoid contact with his advance guard, then on an excursion to South Carolina. Hood, with the balance of bis discomfited ragamuffins, is lying quietly near some small town in Alabama, incapable, we presume, alter the severe drubbing administered by Thomas, either of offence or defence. The rich town of Mobile can be added to our lists of conquests whenever a few thousand veterans see fit to go down and demand ...

STATE JOURNAL. ALEXANDRIA: MONDAY EVENING, JAN. 30, W. J. COWING Editor. Extensive Sale. Owing to the great length of the advertisement of the Direct Tax Commissioners, of the gale of lands in Norfolk and adjoining counties., we have been compelled to put almost our entire force on it to-day The consequence is we are unable to give but a limited amount of reading matter in this issue of the Journal. The advertisement will occupy some sixteen or eighteen columns, but as we will issue the most of it in a supplement it will interfere but little with our reading columns. It will be issued in our edition of to-morrow. Alabama. The character and descent of a majority ot the inhabitants of this large and wealthy State gives assurance that she will want but slight excuse to wheel into the Union line. The capture of Mobile, in addition to the other towns within her borders now in our possession, would do much to develop the latent love of country heretofore known to exist in the portions not...

STATE journal ALEXANDRIA: TUESDAY EVENING, JAN. 31, 1865. U. J (7o\V I IV Kdltor. Fast and Present The present aspect, condition and prospect of Charleston, S. C., is in marked contrast to what it was four years ago. Then the resounding footsteps of tramping legions of enthusiastic rebels were heard in her populous and busy streets. The language of the peo pie was defiaut; they had at last succeeded in dragging the South into the whirlpool of rebellion ; the general government was soon to be made to eat humble pie ; the independence of the South was talked of as an assured thing; a cotton empire loomed up iu the dis.--' tance ; no language was found strong enough to express the general detestation in which the ‘‘accursed Yankees” were held ; the separation between the sections was proclaimed to be eternal by the jubilant fire-eaters. Iu fact, many of them were under the impression that South Carolina alone was about a match for the faithful children of Uncle Sara. | Charleston at th...

STATE JOURNAL. 4 LEXANORTA: ■ THURSDAY EVENING, FE8..3, 1886. W-'j- OOWOG,, •■ • ■ Editor- The Confederacy Sealed Up. The plan to secure foreign intervention in behalf of the Confederacy, by casting it,freed from slavery and purged of its uncletnliness, into the arms of England and France, always preposterous, is now rendered impossible by our completely blockading the Southern ports by actual occupation of harbors and entrances By it the Confederacy has been put out of sight of all foreign powers, and beyond the place where they could have a. pretext for intermeddling. By it we are put in a situation to pursue the work of subduing the rebellion unobstructed By it we are enabled to bid defiance to the world. England cannot now relieve the Confederacy by interrupting our blockade of Soutnern ports. The blockade, no longer dependent on the navy, that portion of our power is now free for defence of northern ports, and for offence against the power that should dare assail or meddle with...
