It is, not a little curious too many note that of their principal contrivances were known and practiced as far back as the times of the Pharaohs, as has been proved .by an examination of tho mouths of several Egyptian mummies, which, in gold-filled molars and false teeth made from ivory or the fangs of oeasts, exhibit unmistakable traces of tho work of the dental surgeon thirty centuries ago Acker's Dyspepsia Tablets are sold on a positive guarantee. WrfVTER STORAGE. [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 19 January 1900

WrfVTER STORAGE. An Opportunity for Display of American Statesmanship— Reclaim the Desert.. - "Water Storage for the Reclamation of Arid Lands" was a subject recently discussed in a lecture by Hon. Frederick 11. Nowell, the irrigation expert of tho Geological . Survey. Mr. Newell has probably made us close a study of tho subject of irrigation as any man in tho country and he views tho question from a very broad standpoint, having reached his conclusions after traversing nearly every foot of tho great West and observing th« operation of different irrigation systems and tho effect of various Stato and local laws and regulations. t Expansion of territory, externally, ho says, is distracting attention from problems equally as great, if not more important, namely those of the extension of agricultural areas and tho utilization of mineral resources well within the present limits of tho United' States. There is an ample Meld for statesmanship in directing .tho utilization of untouched oppo...

Some Maxims of Talleyrand. [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 19 January 1900

Some Maxims of Talleyrand. Prudence in woman should be an instinct, not a virtue. The imagination" of men is often the refuge of their prejudices. SOME STORIES OF LAWTON [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 26 January 1900

SOME STORIES OF LAWTON OaUed "Old Scrappy" by His Friends. HE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE ON THE FIRING LINE Made His Reputation as an Indian Fighter Against the Apache Tribe. "Scrappy" Lawton and sometimes "Old Scrappy," he was called by the men who served in the Second Division of the Fifth Army Corps in the Santiago campaign. . Ho could not be kept from the firing line. Wherever the Mauser slugs from Spanish rifles zipped little clouds of dust from the ground, or whipped and twitted as they cut the air and tall grasses, there "Old Scrappy" could be found. He was told by Chaffee, Ludlow, Breckenridge and ethers that he had no right to expose himself to the fire of the enemy. : He was told that a General in command of a division, which had a front of several miles, ought to be in the rear, out of immediate danger, where he could be found by aids and orderlies. But words of caution were lost on General Lawton. When, during the fight at El Caney, General Shatter sent Major Noble with a messa...

John Buskin, [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 26 January 1900

John Buskin, The death of Ruskin, almost in. his his eighty-first year, removes the last of the great English authors who made illustrious the first half of Victoria's reign. His long life spanned four reigns and comprised an extraordinary amount of work. All the writers of the early Victorian age are gone — Carlyle, Dickens, Thackeray, George Eliot, Tennyson, Browning; gone also are Darwin, Proude, Newman and Matthew Arnold, and only Herbert Spencer remains now that Ruskin is dead. Of all this company of immortals none had higher ideals than Ruskin and in literary work he ranked with the greatest. He was also the chief force in this century in popularizing art in England. —Chronicle.

How He Could Have Been Fainted. [Newspaper Article] — Amador Ledger — 26 January 1900

How He Could Have Been Fainted. A certain lawyer had his portrait painted in his favorite attitude, standing with one hand in his pocket. His friends and clients all went to see it, and everybody said, "Oh, how like: It's the very picture of him." An old farmer dissented. '"Taint like, no Hain't, " said he dryly, looking out of the corner of his eye. " 'Taint like?"exclaimed everybody; "just show us wherein 'taint like." "Taint like, no 'taint," responded the old farmer; "don't you see he has got his hand in his pocket? 'Twould be as like ag'n if he had it in somebody else's pocket. "'—London Tit-Bits:
