Attacked by Indians.—A friend writing from Fort Yuma, under date of Nov. 28, gives us a little insight into the trials and dangers of the Overland Mail Company. We give extracts, as follows: "On the night of the 14th Nov. I came near losing my life by the Maricopa Indians while at the Overland station know n as Suttons. Mr. Sutton left home about 3 o'cl'k in the afternoon to go to Kinion station, about 1G miles distant, on business, leaving his family, consisting of a wife and four children, the station keeper and myself. We all went to bed at the usual hour, the station keeper and myself sleeping in the corral. Between the hours of twelve and one o'clock we were awakened by the eldest boy calling from the door for assistance, stating that the house was on fire. We both rushed to the assistance of the family, and while in the act of dashing water upon the flames, we were fired upon by the Indians, who were concealed under a bank near by and behind the corral. Fortunately neither the...

Dr. L. J. Czapkay.—The number of those who have sacrificed the joys and pleasures of society to gratify a transitory desire for excitement has never been estimated. If they had been, the labors of those who have ventured, in spite of calumny and detraction, to confine themselves to that field of medical research, embraced under the head of chronic diseases, would be much better appreciated than they have hitherto been by the world at large. The efforts of a Ricord, a Sanger, and a Czapkay— the most illustrous exponents of that branch of science are, however, dispelling the mists of prejudice which rendered the treatment of private diseases a forbidden subject to the general public, and those famous practitioners now stand forth in the light of benefactors of their race. In this State, the success of Dr. L. J. Czapkay has been so marked that envy and detraction have done their best to interfere with his prospects, but his skill as a physician had already been so established that he w...

FARQUAR'S MEDICATED CilllU VIII Ai HY! A delicious Tonic Bitten Juice of the Grape, medicated with Juniper, Rhubarb, and Peruvian Bark, lor Invalids. "Good Wine needs no bu«h," BUT in this age of quackery and humbug, it is necessary to at least state the virtues or qualities of even a well known article, and certainly the California Grape could lay claim to this title. I believe, indeed, I know from experience, that its juice produces a purer, less hurtful, and more exhilarating and healthful beverage than nine-tenths of the stuff imported and imitated in the United States. If this can be said of the wine usually sold, what cannot be said of Brandies? Pah ! the very thought is significant of poison. But to the purpose. Dr. Jas. L. Fnnjuar's Medicated California Wine and Brand)-, is simply the fer mented juice, and the distilled juice of "the California Grape, judiciuusly medicated with Peruvian Bark, Turkey Rhubarb, Juniper Berries, and othervegetable remedial agents.skillfully comb...

LETTER FROM SENATOR GWIN. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 17 December 1859

LETTER FROM SENATOR GWIN. To the Editor of the Constitution: On the 16th of September last the National newspaper, at San Francisco, published an elaborate address of the Hon. Stephen A. Douglas, reviewing a speech delivered by me to a portion of my constituents at Grass Valley during the late canvass in California, which was published in the same paper on the 16th July last. The address of Mr. Douglas vvas published during my absence on a visit to the State Fair at Sacramento, and the brief period that intervened between my return home and the time fixed for my departure on the 20th of September placed it out of my power to reply to it at that time. A vory large portion of the address is devoted to an exposition of the alleged inconsistencies on the subject of territorial power upon the part of a number of the most distinguished members of the Democratic party. As no such charge of inconsistency is alleged by Mr. Douglas against myself, having always avowed the same views upon this...
