No. 3: Gays, lesbians rush to marry The nation saw same-sex couples exchange wedding vows in highly-publicized ceremonies in San Francisco, Massachusetts and in individ- ual counties in New York, Oregon and New Mexico. The weddings started in San Francisco where Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered local offi- cials in February to begin issuing marriage licenses and performing weddings for same-sex couples. More than 3,000 gay and lesbian cou- ples, including one lesbian couple from the Dallas area, flocked to the West Coast to get mar- ried. The weddings continued in San Francisco for about a month before a California court ordered them stopped. About the same time, a local offi- cial in Sandoval County, New Mexico, be...

RESOLUTIO review Any one who has seen our offices knows that our one addiction is books. The other day, though, Mike threw away a perfectly good book. It wasn't offensive or poorly written. "I just couldn't stand to read one more gay or lesbian-themed novel that presumes every homosexual with any intelligence lives in New York or maybe San Francisco." Many lesbian/gay publications project a "bi-coastal bias" that seems to ignore the fact that only a small percentage of us live in NY, LA or SF. Most of us live in cities or towns that need more than two letters for identification. Please don't misunderstand; these are wonderful cities. But the gay media should recognize that life out here in the middle of America has some distinct advantages. Almost every reporter who visits the Cathedral of Hope wants to know why the world's largest lesbian/gay/transgendered church is in Dallas,Texas. The answer is complex, but, clearly, part of the reason is this community. If you are reading this, ...

loci news said that she can't go anywhere these days with- out someone recognizing her and coming up to talk to her. And she said every time that happens, she just feels honored that the people of Dallas County have trusted her enough to give her this job. "She has never forgotten her roots, never for- gotten where she comes from, and because of that she has a real heart for people who are less fortu- nate. It gives her a very rich base to work from," Brock continued. "And because she has kept sight of her roots, I am confident she will be able to keep her ego in check. She sees the good things happening in her life as a honor and a blessing, not something to be arrogant about." At first, Valdez was wary of wearing the "les- bian" label. That gradually eased. She accepted a donation from the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, which donates only to openly gay candidates, and she campaigned frequently at GLBT community events. She also never made a big issue of her sexuali- ty. But in the ...

One old man and a literate baby Father Time passes on advice in a conversation with the New Year baby A stooped old man with a long beard prepares to leave the room as a baby sporting a sash reading "2005" crawls in from the oppo- site direction. "Hey, don't go yet!" yells the baby, revealing remarkable speaking powers. "Child, I'm dead on my feet. I'm outta here," the old man replies. "But you need to give me some advice, some hints, some cash." "It's your gig now. See?" He holds up his hourglass. "Just a couple of grains left." "Hold it, Grandpa. Don't make me report you to the union," the baby said. Father Time sighs and turns around. "Baby New Year my eye. Baby Rat Fink, more like." The tot scans him. "You don't look so good." "I don't feel so good." The old man drops into a chair. "Believe it or not, I looked just like you a year ago. By February, I could walk into a bar and get any guy I wanted." life+styletube "Vfear in, t I'M THE RHODA: Michaels plays Tess, the sarcastic neighbor on the new TV show, "Committed." Balancing a new sitcom and caring for a wife battling breast cancer, Tammy Lynn Michaels says 2005 is all about good times ahead y Daniel A. Kusner Life+Styles Editor For actress Tammy Lynn Michaels, 2004 was a mixture of untold bliss and extreme challenges. Ever since their celebrity-packed wedding on Sept. 22, 2003, Michaels and wife Melissa Etheridge have enjoyed life as enchanted newlyweds. In January, Michaels guest-starred in the debut episode of "The L Word." In February, Etheridge released "Lucky," an album inspired by the cou- ples' harmonious union. As the year rolled out, the rockstar played three-hour shows while tour- ing standing-room-only nightclubs. And the actress landed a starring role on "Committed," an NBC sitcom that premieres Tuesday. Then, on Oct. 8, Etheridge posted a notice on her Web site that she was being treated for breast cancer. 2004 IN REVIEW — REALITY TAKES A BIG BITE By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic Best film: 'Bad Education' If a trend could be seen in this year's movies,- it was toward documentaries and biopics. More than a dozen documentaries focused on the presidential candidates ("Fahrenheit 9/11," "Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry"), election issues ("Uncovered: The War on Iraq") and same-sex marriage ("Tying the Knot"). Even before Charlize Theron carried off her Oscar for portraying Aileen Wuornos in "Monster," fiims were in production or on their way to theaters about Ray Charles, Howard Hughes, Cole Porter, Bobby Darin, Bobby Jones, Alfred Kinsey, Ned Kynaston, Ramon Sampedro, Ernesto "Che" Guevara, Samuel Bicke, Paul Rusesabagina, J.M. Barrie, Achilles and Alexander the Great. From a queer per- spective, the good news is that the year's best picture s Pedro Aimodovar's "Bad Education." The year's biggest disappointment was the lack of physical affection between Colin Farrell a...
