Buxton Resident Dies Suddenly [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 23 September 1949

Buxton Resident Dies Suddenly On Friday night, 16th Sept., at Ron Bassett's Mill, one of the hands heard a sudden crash in the hut occupied by Paul Hickle. On entering the hut he found his workmate lying almost in the fire. He dragged him to safety and laid him on the bed but he passed away before medical aid could be summoned. None of .the deceased man's relatives could be located, and in a manner typical of the commun ity-spirit in the district his friends and workmates made arrange ments for the man to receive a proper burial. Mr. T. Jones bore the major share of the organising and as sembled the mourners at Bux ton from whence they followed the remains of their comrade fo Marysville cemetery. WAR PENSIONS AND THE ; -BUDGET. The acting Federal President of the R.S.L., Mr. G. W. The Federal Executive of the R.S.L. had prepared a'combTprehensive pension plan which encompassed amendments necessary to allb0v-Stome measure of just and reasonable treatment to war pensioners and their dependants.;This plan had been prepared -by the Fede ral Executive as a- specialist body hav-y ing intimate and personal knowledge of the conditions under, which pen. sioners, war. widows and their depenl dants w...

Our Regiment. (Contributed.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 30 September 1949

Our Regiment. (Contributed.) The very welcome news of the proposed formation of a half squadron of the 8113th Armoured Regiment (V.M.R.), one of ,the oldest Regiments of Victoria, whose ranks :have always been filled by volunteers, opens up a wide field of opportunity indeed for the young men of this Shire. Usually one is inclined to con sider military training solely from the point of view of defence of our homes and Motherland, and way of life generally, but it is proposed to point out briefly the distinct advantages gained by the indivi.ual participating in that training. On enlistment, he is removed from his immediate'environment and, shorn of his everyday asso ciations, steps forward into life with a body of men all similarly placed, where he is accepted at his face value and it is judged only on his ability to pull his weight in the team,:both on and off duty. It will all be very strange in the beginning but' as the training proceeds he will gain confidence in his own ability ...

ENGLISH XI TO VISIT EUROA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 30 September 1949

ENGLISH XI TO VISIT EUROA. Euroa residents, and cricketers in particular, Were delighted to read in the "Advertiser" last week that the Victorian Cricket Association had re. commended to. the. Board. of. ,Control that Euroa: should'be one of the two' country centres to be visited by the next English eleven. It would be most unusual if the Board did, not adopt the recommendation, so it is fairly certain that Euroa will be honored by, the visit. The other Victorian country fixture is at Geelong.. It is a big honor for the town, and a fine advertisement for the oval, that Euroa has been selected, as other ap. plicants were the bigger centres of" Albury, Bendigo, Sheppartpl, Ballarat and Hamilton.
